Merit Mushrooms Our mushrooms are grown locally in Elstree, and we sell directly to you, our customer. At Merit Mushrooms we only sell mushrooms that are worthy of a merit.

Merit Mushrooms is a small, quality-focused gourmet mushroom producer that grows fresh mushrooms that are picked for the customer alongside selling other mushroom growing products. This means that we do not produce or sell mushrooms that are not up to our high standards. We are able to do this by using natural products to grow our mushrooms on which allows us to keep our standards high and our qua

lity even higher! Our passion for mushrooms and quality has driven us right from the beginning stages and continues to drive us into the future. Our story started with lots of research and experiments, testing and finding new, better ways of creating tasty, fresh mushrooms. Our family-run team knows that every mushroom counts, and strives to make the entire shopping experience as rewarding and easy as possible, besides selling the freshest mushrooms possible. 🍷 Giant Wine Caps fresh from the woodchip beds today 🍄

We are very excited to manage to grow our first successful crop of Wine Cap Mushroom outdoors 😊

These beautiful mushrooms were grown on woodchips and straw, where the mycelium slowly transforms the substrate into rich living soil while producing these incredible burgundy caps.

Outdoor grown.
No artificial lighting.
Just fresh air, rain, woodchips and patience 🌱

Thick stems, deep wine-coloured caps and a rich earthy flavour.

Besides producing delicious mushrooms, Wine Caps are also fantastic for the garden. Their mycelium helps break down tough wood mulches, improves soil health by building rich organic humus, supports moisture retention, accumulates essential nutrients and can help suppress harmful nematodes. Wine Cap beds are also known for attracting beneficial earthworms and encouraging a healthier living soil ecosystem 🍂🪱

It is always an amazing feeling to see a new species successfully fruiting for the first time 🍄

We also hope to have Wine Cap spawn available on our website soon for anyone wanting to grow them in their own garden beds or woodchip paths 😊

We’ve finally done it… morels 🤍

Morels are unlike the mushrooms we usually grow. They don’t grow on wood, but in soil, and they’re known for being particularly sensitive to their environment, which makes them difficult to get right.

Everything we’ve done until now has been indoors, in controlled conditions. Once a crop is finished, we turn the leftover substrate into compost, which we use to enrich the soil these morels have grown in. It’s a slower process, but one that feels right to us.

This has been a long time coming, with plenty of trial and error along the way. Seeing them come through properly now feels very rewarding.

The flavour is something else. Deep, nutty, earthy, with a rich, almost meaty depth.

We’ll have a small amount from tomorrow at Islington Farmers Market and Marylebone Farmers Market. They’ll be on the website shortly after.
