My favourite moments in Alto Adige….

- Starting the day with the Alpine tradition of swim, sauna and ice bath

- A jeep tour with Weingut Tenuta J. Hofstätter and drinking some of the oldest Pinot Noir in the region. This wine’s vine was planted 1962, though their oldest was planted in 1942.

- Enjoying a foodie tradition of the area, my first marende (basically a brilliant picky bits picnic) at TIEFENBRUNNER overlooking their vines with their exquisite Au Chardonnay

- Having a Beauty & The Beast moment in the library of Monastery Abbazia di Novacella - This working monastery offers tours of the ornate church (check out that ceiling!) wine tastings in the beautiful gardens and there was even a brass band playing.

- Drinking a lightly chilled St. Maddalena made with indigenous grape Schiava under the dappled shade of a tree. Traditional speck, Kaminwurz, cheese and schüttelbrot (a thin dried bread). This region used to be poor so they made food that was dried, cured and made to last a long time. Now it’s one of the most Michelin starred areas of the world - but sometimes the simple things are the best.

- Having Kellerei CantinaTerlano Vorberg, the first ever Alto Adige wine I tried, in its actual vineyard. Drinking in situ is the best thing.

When I got the call about Matthew I contacted City AM and asked if I could please cancel my planned column and write a tribute instead. I wrote this in the first couple of hours when I’d heard the news so it’s not polished but it’s from the heart.

Matthew Jukes, you are and always will be missed. ❤️

Devastated. Like everyone who met Matthew I am shocked and heartbroken at his far-too-early passing. From the moment we met (captured here) he was unique in his energy and support - first professionally and then as a friend. And it is clear from all the outpouring of love on here that that’s how he made everyone feel.

The wine world has lost one of its brightest, kindest and most enthusiastically welcoming. I have lost my friend. Amelia and his family - who he loved more than anything else - have my enduring love and sympathy. He was an incredible human.

Matthew, you left the world, me and many others better than you found us. And that’s something we all strive for. You will be endlessly and always missed.
