Buffalo Trace is an 8-12-year-old Kentucky Straight Bourbon whiskey crafted from a rye recipe and bottled to "Kentucky proof" 40% ABV. Having aged for at least 8 years, a maximum of 50 barrels are selected from our premiere aging slots for each production batch. To ensure the consistency and exceptional quality of Buffalo Trace, each of these barrels is tasted by our Master Distiller and his team to ensure the taste profile and balance of Buffalo Trace. Up to 70% of a bourbon’s flavour comes from the barrel.

Buffalo Trace uses brand new, charred American white oak barrels - 53 gallons each - to shape colour, aroma and taste over years of ageing.

Longer ageing means more interaction… and more evaporation (we canl that the Angel’s Share).

If you’ve ever heard the phrase “a drop of water opens up a whiskey,” there’s actual science behind that 🧪🥃

Whiskey isn’t a simple liquid: it’s a mix of ethanol, water and lots of flavour compounds. At higher alcohol strengths, some of those flavour molecules can get trapped in tiny clusters called micelles.

Add a very small amount of water, and those clusters can break up, helping more aromas and volatiles reach the surface of the glass so your nose (and palate) can pick up more of what’s really there.

👨‍🔬 It’s an experiment worth trying at home with a dropper. Start tiny and see how it changes what you smell and taste.

The name Buffalo Trace comes from the ancient paths carved by migrating buffalo across Kentucky - routes later followed by early settlers as they moved west. One of those traces ran straight through what would become the Buffalo Trace Distillery site.

Swipe and you’ll see an original 1935 drawing of the George T. Stagg Co. water tower, a piece of distillery history that still stands today as a landmark of the site.

Long before it became iconic, it watched over the same limestone springs and riverbanks that first made whiskey-making possible here.

From buffalo trails to barrel warehouses, this place has always been shaped by the land beneath it 🦬
