A mature 2009 Craigellachie showing exactly the kind of character the distillery is known for — oily, robust and full of personality.

Tasted by Colin Hampden-White, Keeper of the Quaich
“An excellent Craigellachie, ready to bottle now.”

And for those who would rather give it a little more time, he believes it could continue maturing for another couple of years to make a very good 18-year-old.

A cask with two very appealing paths ahead of it — bottle and enjoy its character now, or continue the maturation journey.

Bidding remains open until 9 June, 8:00pm (BST).

Full Tasting note:

Colour: Honey

Nose: Baked apricots and oily all at the same time. A tiny bit of struck match mixing with the mechanical oil giving really good Craigellachie character. Crisp green apple and zesty citrus and touches of vanilla in the background.

Palate: Vanilla fudge, cooked apple and grass seed oils all come through at first. Followed by a little spice, vanilla and buttered pastry. Milk chocolate and then more spice (not hot spice), come through towards the end with a little oak.

Finish: The finish remains sweet yet have spice and oak with touches of honey all the way through to the end where there is a tiny touch of smoke or char.

Conclusion: This is an excellent Craigellachie, ready to bottle now. It could go on for another couple of years to make a very good 18-year-old, but delicious right now.

Bunnahabhain Peated (Moine) 2008 Barrel
ABV: 60.90%

Colour: Golden Straw Nose: Sweet, oily earthy peat with a touch of BBQ smoke. Rich orchard fruit and a little damp sweet to***co. Soft spice and fleshy sweet lemons.
Palate: Sweet peat and smoke come through first followed by rich fruit well balanced with fine spice and vanilla. Rich oak, honey and a touch of white chocolate come later.
Finish: Remains sweet, the oily peat turns dryer as the oak encroaches. Dry smoke and oak stay right to the end with a touch of spice.
Conclusion: Ready to bottle and delicious. A very good expression of Moine. It will last easily to 18 years old.

ABV: 60.44%
AGE: 16

Colour: Honey Nose: Quite hot at first with subtle smoke and cooked apple. Earthy with a dry charred oak note.
Palate: Sweet honey and earthy forest floor with BBQ smoke and touch of cinnamon. There are some light herbal notes which lead to dry oak at the end of the palate keeping it fresh and balanced. Rich fruits and well balanced by herbal spicy notes.
Finish: Spicy and earthy with a sweet rich honey edge right the way through to the end.
Conclusion: Very nice to bottle now.

We've curated a selection of amazing Scotch wh**ky casks for our September auction, including this 29 year old Benriach Hogshead.

Nose:
Sweet dried orchard fruits including stone fruits and exotic spices. Lots of floral notes mixing with white pepper and vanilla. There are touches of beeswax polish in the background, light dried to***co and a little chocolate.

Palate:
The palate is a very good reflection of the nose with complex dried fruits and floral notes. It is not drying, but juicy at first until the spice kicks in and then dry oak slowly builds up. More beeswax towards the end. The alcohol is very well integrated.

Finish:
Spicy with more oak, sweet pastry and white pepper.
