We’ve all seen every team play once now, so which nation does the NCGM community think will win the world cup? Spoiler alert - there might be a few who think it’s coming home!!

17/06/2026

The World Cup is about to start - well, for England fans anyway - and we asked a few people across the fruit and veg and flower markets to give us their answer to two questions:

1) How will England get on in the 2026 ?

2) Why?

We got some pretty mixed responses, as you might expect!!

Tune back in after the first round of matches finishes to find out who the market community thinks will win the World Cup - after they’ve had a chance to see every team play once.

.flowers.week was founded 13 years ago by New Covent Garden Market. It is now expertly managed and led by Flowers From the Farm, the UK’s leading trade association for independent flower growers.

We created the annual campaign to celebrate the wealth, variety, and sustainability of the UK’s cut flower industry; to champion local growers, wholesalers, and the florists who bring British blooms to life.

And while we have taken a step back and become supporter rather than organiser, we’re naturally delighted to see it getting the exposure it deserves - including a lovely piece on Radio 4’s BBC Woman's Hour yesterday.

According to Flowers From the Farm, small-scale growers now generate £30 million a year and women account for 80% of its members. Two of them, Olivia Wilson, a florist and flower farmer, and Georgie Newberry who has a flower farm in Somerset, feature on the programme, which you can listen to through the link in our bio

From all of us here in Nine Elms, best wishes to everyone celebrating and showcasing homegrown flowers this week!

Sweet peas are now well and truly in-season and Essex girl Liz from alongside other florists who visit the market are making the most of it.

Sweet Peas have been treating everyone at the market to their delicate scent, dainty petals, and cottage-garden charm.

From soft pastels and creamy whites to vibrant purples, rich pinks, and sunset shades, they are one of the most loved highlights of the floral season.

Their season is fleeting, but that only makes them more special.

Whether woven into a wild, romantic arrangement or gathered in simple bunches, sweet peas have their own effortless way of bringing movement, fragrance, and elegance to every design.

The flower market community sends its condolences to the wife and family of William Edward Haynes, known to everyone as Bill, who has died aged 92, leaving behind a legacy rooted in flowers, family and kindness.

Born in London, Bill moved to Rochford as a child. After completing National Service, he began work at EK Cole in Southend, while helping his father on the family smallholding in Rochford, where pigs were raised and crucially, flowers grown for sale at London markets and outside Rochford Hospital.

Following his father’s death, Bill and his wife Gwen took on the flower stalls together. In 1963, the couple bought an empty shop in West Street and opened W E Haynes Florist, with Bill continuing to work at ECKO by day and delivering flowers in the evenings.

He worked tirelessly, often seven days a week, regularly leaving home at midnight to travel to Covent Garden Flower Market while also supporting local growers wherever possible. Flowers were not just Bill’s work but his passion, reflected in his garden and the many Royal Horticultural Society medals he won for his prizewinning dahlias.

His florist shop was a focal point of the town. From everyday bouquets to wedding flowers and funeral tributes, Bill believed flowers should bring comfort, joy and dignity at life’s most important moments.

After retiring, Bill cherished time with Gwen, his wife of more than 72 years, and enjoyed travelling, especially to Madeira during its flower festival, which he called his special place.

He was a devoted father, grandfather and greatgrandfather, happiest when surrounded by his family.

Rest in peace, Bill. It was a pleasure to know you.
