Got a package from Mum a couple of weeks ago.
A note, a book, and a stack of recipes she’d gone to real effort to dig out and send over from the other side of the world.
Some were scans from my Uncle Ty in Aus. Only the ones he’d tried and tested himself, with his notes scribbled alongside.
The rest came from a recipe book I didn’t know existed, “Spice & Everything Nice”, put together by the women of the St Francis Xavier Association in Hong Kong, back when we lived there in the late 80s and early 90s. They collated it to keep their family and our community recipes alive, passed down generation to generation so they wouldn’t be lost.
Indian and Goan recipes. Proper ones. The kind written down by people who actually cooked them, for people they loved.
I’ll be honest, opening it got me a bit emotional. Not just because it came from Mum, but because it carried all these people from our past along with it.
This is exactly why I started Easy E’s. These flavours mean something to me. And now I’ve got a whole book of inspiration to keep building on.
More to come.
