Now that the winner has been revealed, I can now show you the design/decoration that I sent in to the competition.
There were lots of things that had to be taken into account. One of the main criteria was that the design should be easy to replicate for mass production. So when I sent this, I stated that that some parts eg. numerals, numbers, crown, banner would require a mould or cutters as my version was nearly all freehand which is more time consuming.
I am not disappointed that I didn't win. As a designer of cake decorations, I have a particular and very distinctive style, which has evolved over a couple of decades, that's not to say that I am particularly skilled at what I do. The combination of techniques and colours (especially Antique Gold) make it easy to identify my designs. When interpreted by others, things can look altogether very different; I realise that I am more precious about my designs than I ever thought.
I did actually know the outcome of this competition way back in November, but was not allowed to say. Me and Lucy spent a wonderful few hours at the Waitrose Cookery School in Kings Cross where I met the other finalists. Photographs were taken and we were treated to a delicious afternoon tea. Everyone involved with Waitrose was so nice, and we left with a little bag full of lovely things. We will also be attending The Queen's 90th birthday celebrations in Windsor Castle next month as guests of Waitrose, which we are really looking forward to, so altogether not a bad day's work.
PS. If you are an Enfield resident, the other article that I mentioned (interview and pics) is published in today's (20/4/16) Enfield Independent.
