Lucocoa Chocolate

Lucocoa Chocolate Lucocoa Chocolate is London's first bean to bar chocolate making company based in Bermondsey. We don't use any refined sugar or artificial sweeteners

Welcome to Lucocoa Chocolate. London’s first bean to bar chocolate maker. With a passion for health and fitness we decided back in 2014 to challenge the status quo of chocolate. We wanted to make luxury chocolate that was good for you and removed guilt from guilty pleasure. To do this we:
First decided to make our chocolate from scratch– from the cocoa bean itself. It was the only way we could be

sure that our chocolate contained the finest ingredients and was made to an excellent standard. We searched high and low around this great world looking for cocoa beans that ticked the right boxes - Those that combined the best taste, finest quality, were organic and had the fairest practices in place. This, we achieved by using only rare Criollo and Trinatario cocoa beans that make up less than 15% of the world's cocoa. Our beans are from Madagascar, Belize, Guatemala, and the Dominican Republic. In doing this we joined a niche group of only a small handful of chocolate makers in the UK. Second, we promised to never use refined sugar, additives, preservatives or any nasties. Our bars are only sweetened with unrefined coconut sugar and the superfood lucuma (a fruit from Peru). This combination gives our bars a uniquely rich and warm flavour. Our ingredients have been used to inspire our name – Lucocoa. We have a fine range of six bars. Four dark, one dark milk (50%) and our signature Natural Blonde which is our version of white chocolate which possesses a creamy, caramel flavour that will be like nothing you’ve ever tasted before and will definitely leave you wanting more. We hope you enjoy them as much as we enjoy making them for you.

We’ve got some bittersweet news to share with you 💔 After much thought, we’ve made the tough decision to close Lucocoa. It’s been an incredible and amazing 9 years 🙌🏾

We have been on the hunt for investment for the last few years but have always hit a brick wall; this in an ever-increasing landscape which has made running a business like ours increasingly difficult. We came through COVID-19 and battled through Brexit, which meant importing ingredients became difficult and expensive.

With machines like ours that need to be on for at least three days straight to make the chocolate, the bills continued to rise. Inflation, as you know, has really been a game changer, and let’s be honest, there is only so much right now you can pay for a chocolate bar!

Whilst it is viable for us to continue in our current capacity, we are at a crossroads with so much in flux.

It’s a shame, as I love what we do and am so proud of what I have achieved. It’s been a joy getting to know some of you really well and hearing about the love you have for Lucocoa, too.

So, What, When, etc?

Our last day in our factory here in Bermondsey will be Friday, July 19th.

We will be accepting new orders from now until Wednesday, 10th July.

Thank you so much again for your support 🍫

Lord Frank Field

(16 July 1942 – 23 April 2024)

Lord Field was a great advocate for really making the Modern Slavery Act deliver. As a business we bang on about sustainability, transparency and anti slavery in cocoa. It makes sense that we should be doing things to move the dial on this.

So I got in touch with Lord Field a few years ago and have been blown away by his constant dedication. We discussed the best way to really make an impact and how we make businesses accountable. Truly accountable, signing an anti-slavery statement annually that nobody checks up on really isn’t moving the dial.

This was a piece that he sent me on from what he wrote about the Modern Slavery Act

"... a host of big businesses from Tesco to the Co-op, from Primark to investment bankers like Rathbones, would welcome the legislation. Slavery (by which we mean not just human trafficking but also domestic servitude) is the second largest global criminal industry. Slave labourers are invisible: it is difficult for the T-shirt retailer in London to know the labour conditions of the cotton pickers in India. By not forcing companies to conduct due diligence, to declare their supply chains slave-free, Cameron has denied them the best line of defence: ‘I checked my suppliers, as the law demands.’ This leaves them open to accusations of illegal practice and — just watch — lawsuits."

What an amazing man who will be missed by so many dearly!

I was on this morning talking about all things Lucocoa 🙌🏾 🎙️

From starting to make chocolate in my second bedroom to addressing slave labour in the cocoa industry, it’s always amazing to share our journey.
