This Lunar New Year begins the Fire Horse year, traditionally linked with freedom, movement, and the pursuit of success.

Since 2016, our work has centred on developing long-term relationships with coffee farmers and producers across Asia, bringing some of the earliest Chinese specialty coffee lots to the UK. These partnerships continue today through our ongoing work with and partner producers at Banka, Baima, Gui Ben, Kaku, and D**gka.

Lunar New Year has become a natural moment for sharing Asian coffees more widely. It has been encouraging to see these origins take a more consistent place on roasters’ menus and in everyday drinking.

We wish our partners, customers, and community a prosperous year ahead in the Fire Horse year.

As harvest winds through Asia’s highlands, stories travel with it.

From Yunnan’s misty mountains to Java’s volcanic slopes, every region holds legends of spirits, protectors, and unseen forces that shape life and land.

These are the kinds of stories that make us love coffee even more: the history, the connection to the land, and the hands that grow it.

Happy Halloween!

Behind every great coffee is a great story. And behind Banka, the story is layered.

Hundreds of local harvesters across a wide variety of ethnic groups (Lahu, Dai, Wa primarily) have helped put this region on the specialty coffee map.

In 2018, took the helm of the wet mill, introducing an optical sorter, experimenting with yeast fermentation and trialling varieties like Pacamara and Yellow Bourbon.

The result? A community anchored in innovation, a land returning to its potential, and a cup that carries all of that forward.

Roasters: join us in sharing Banka with your customers.

This season’s bags have just landed, and there are just a few left to snap up.

🇨🇳 Yunnan, famed for some of the world’s most celebrated teas, is quietly redefining its place on the global map as a producer of exceptional specialty coffee. 🌿

Specialty-grade coffee production in this Chinese region has surged from 8% to more than 30% in recent years, with exports climbing over 350%!

Why the success?

Yunnan’s altitude, volcanic soil, and biodiversity create excellent growing conditions. The slow, even maturation of cherries produces remarkable flavour clarity and sweetness unique to the region.

Yunnan is also home to diverse Indigenous communities whose traditions and cultures have been deeply preserved. They possess generations of agricultural knowledge, from understanding soil and altitude to perfecting the art of fermentation and drying. That same skill and respect for the land now flow naturally into coffee cultivation.

Our long-term partners at (YCT) have been at the heart of this transformation, empowering farmers through training, sustainable practices, and fair pricing. 🙌

Farmers in Yunnan are seeing real benefits from this growing specialty movement:
fairer incomes, improved infrastructure, diversified farms, and new opportunities for their communities.

For us, this journey represents what matters most:
meaningful relationships, sustainability, and progress shared at every level of the supply chain. 💫

The results:
coffees like Gui Ben and Banka have been gaining appreciation across the global coffee community for their clean, fruit-forward profiles and balance. 🍇☕

Nine years. One shared purpose. Endless inspiration. ☕

Our partnership with Yunnan Coffee Traders (YCT) and Gui Ben farm began in 2016, long before most people had heard of Chinese specialty coffee. Together, we’ve supported the pioneering work of producers like Mr Tian Cai and his family, who are redefining what coffee from this region can be.

Tian Cai’s motivation is simple yet powerful: to create sustainable livelihoods for his community and to return the land to a more biodiverse state. 🌟

Alongside his relative Mr Tang, he ensures that surrounding smallholder families are supported through fair pricing, shared resources, and organic farming practices. Among the tea and coffee fields, the land has been populated with macadamia trees, mangoes, and oranges. 🌴🍊

Through YCT’s commitment to sustainable production, coffee has become a force for renewal here - improving local livelihoods while restoring the balance between people and nature.

We’re proud to have shared this journey with them since the very beginning and to continue bringing these remarkable coffees to roasters across the UK and Europe. 🫶

Our Gui Ben coffees have just arrived from the mountains of Yunnan, China… and there’s only a few bags left!

These two lots represent nearly a decade of friendship, collaboration and shared learning with our partners at Yunnan Coffee Traders. Together, we’ve seen Gui Ben evolve from a promising origin to one of the most consistent and expressive coffees we bring to the UK.

Here’s what you can expect:
🍇 Natural – grape jelly, kumquat, cacao nibs
🍍 Honey – pineapple, caramel, lemon iced tea

This coffee continues to challenge expectations of what Asian specialty coffee can be.

We don’t expect it to last long, so get in touch!
