The most common reaction we hear is: “I never knew all these jobs existed.”

And it's true. Flour mills are full of careers that young people may not always see or think of, including hands‑on engineering, advanced technology, busy sales teams, finance roles that support every part of the business, and so much more.

National Careers Week, happening now, is our chance to share that excitement, to welcome curiosity, and to show future talent what is possible inside a modern mill.

Young people, parents, educators, and careers counsellors are encouraged to download National Careers Week’s E‑zine 31 and head to page 19 to explore the wide range of job types available within flour mills: https://nationalcareersweek.com/the-career-download-edition-31/

Every mill has people whose journeys started with a curiosity — a love of science, a penchant for sales, a knack for fixing things, a passion for food, a drive to make a difference.

National Careers Week, happening now, is the moment we share those journeys and opportunities with the next generation.

When young people hear how someone found their place in a mill via National Careers Week, they begin to imagine where their own path might lead.

Check out the E-zine, download 31, page 19 for more: https://nationalcareersweek.com/the-career-download-edition-31/

Every young person has a spark, whether it’s problem‑solving, creativity, teamwork, precision, or curiosity.

Flour milling has a place for all of these strengths.

Through National Careers Week (happening this week!), our members help young people understand that careers in our industry aren’t just “jobs,” they’re opportunities to grow, learn, contribute, and be part of something that truly matters.

As Fibre February just wrapped up, FAB Flour’s new survey reminds us why this campaign matters: fibre is vital for our long-term health, yet most of us still aren’t getting enough.

The good news is that adding more fibre can be simple and delicious. Whether it’s choosing foods higher in fibre or making small swaps, every step helps close the gap.

Thank you to our partners for their dedication: British Dietetic Association, British Nutrition Foundation, Craft Bakers Association, Federation of Bakers, Food – a fact of life, Food and Drink Federation (FDF), and The Food Foundation. 🌾💛

Find out more and read the survey here:

Did you know? Only 18% of people centre their diets around grains compared to 60% for fruits and veg and 51% around protein.
Further, FAB Flour’s recent survey of 2,000 UK adults shows that 57% believe wheat is important in the diet: https://fabflour.co.uk/fab-health-nutrition/nutritional-information/fibre-february

Fibre February is the perfect time to bring grains, including the wheat that make flour and therefore flour-filled foods like bread, pasta, and beyond, to the fore…they’re eaten so frequently!

Flour millers play a key part, nudging the national fibre intake with everyday foods. Better yet, simple swaps and additions can really build up the fibre. Who doesn’t enjoy beans on toast, wholemeal pasta bolognese, or a veggie packed muffin?

Flour is a staple ingredient that nourishes the nation, and behind every bag and bulker are the skilled flour millers working every day in mills across the UK and Ireland. For Fibre February, we’re highlighting the role flour plays in supporting healthier fibre intake.

Did you know that all wheat flours contain fibre, with wholemeal flour containing the most, which helps people move closer to the NHS‑recommended 30g a day for adults?

Our consumer‑facing side, FAB Flour, is also helping close the fibre gap by sharing simple, flavour‑filled ideas that champion fibre through everyday foods. One delicious example is this leek and asparagus traybake tart, which pairs flour with seasonal vegetables: https://fabflour.co.uk/recipes/leek-and-asparagus-traybake-tart

Fibre 101: To call a food a source of fibre it needs at least 3g per 100g. To call it high fibre, it must contain 6g per 100g — criteria recognised by NHS, British Dietetic Association, Guts UK Charity, British Heart Foundation, and others.

But FAB Flour’s new survey shows there’s still confusion: only 30% of UK adults identified bread as fibre‑rich, even though wholemeal and seeded loaves meet these thresholds and all wheat flours contain fibre in varying amounts, including those used in white bread.

That’s why, this Fibre February, we’re working with our members and industry partners, including British Nutrition Foundation, British Dietetic Association, Craft Bakers Association, Federation of Bakers, Food - a fact of life, Food and Drink Federation (FDF), and The Food Foundation, to help make fibre clearer and easier for everyone so consumers will boost their daily fibre intake to the recommended daily amount (30g for adults).

This morning, we hosted our Fibre February webinar, “Closing the UK Fibre Gap Through Everyday Staples,” with a presentation by Katerina Sakellaropoulou, Registered Dietitian and Nutrition Scientist at the British Nutrition Foundation.

Katerina took us on a fascinating tour of why fibre is so important for everyday health, and it goes beyond digestion! Attendees learned how:

🧠 Fibre can support the gut–brain axis, helping to regulate mood, stress, and appetite
❤️ A higher‑fibre diet is linked to a lower risk of heart disease and stroke
🎗️ Eating enough fibre can help reduce the risk of certain cancers
😴 Certain fibre‑derived compounds may even play a role in better sleep
🌾 And, importantly, how familiar foods like bread, pasta, and other flour‑based staples can make boosting fibre simple and realistic for busy lives

We were also delighted to see such strong engagement from our members, associate members, and partners. Their questions and insights helped make the session lively, practical, and full of future discussions.

Curious about the fibre gap? Check out FAB Flour’s Fibre February survey findings: https://fabflour.co.uk/fab-health-nutrition/nutritional-information/fibre-february

Did you know? Nearly 38% of people are tied between most enjoying store-bought and homemade bread.

But when people bake at home, nearly 27% would try for wholemeal, 18% for white sliced, and 13% for multigrain bread, according to FAB Flour’s recent survey of 2,000 adults across the UK: https://fabflour.co.uk/fab-health-nutrition/nutritional-information/fibre-february

Flour millers play a key role, nourishing the nation with this key ingredient—one that’s accessible, tasty, and importantly during Fibre February, can be used to boost consumers’ daily fibre intake to the NHS’ recommended daily amount for adults of 30g.

We’ve got a bright, tasty idea for Fibre February, via FAB Flour 🌽🌶️🌾

These charred corn and chilli pancakes are fresh, golden, and full of flavour—perfect for Fibre February and as you prepare for Pancake Day (but with a savoury twist). They’re the kind of easy, cheerful recipe that comes together quickly but still feels a bit special.

They’re also a lovely reminder that everyday foods made with flour can help contribute to your fibre intake, helping you reach the NHS-recommended 30g daily for adults.

As National Apprenticeship Week comes to a close, we’re finishing with a spotlight on Janet, an apprentice at Whitworth Bros Ltd.

In her reflections, she shared a point that sums up the industry well: flour milling may be highly automated, but it’s still a people and skills industry. The technology works because the teams behind it bring judgement, problem solving, and experience to the job every day.

It’s a great reminder of why apprenticeships matter and why investing in people remains at the heart of our industry.
