Bringing the very best wines to life!

The 1998 vintage is often overshadowed by 1996, 2000 and 2005 on the Left Bank, but it produced a beautifully classic Lafite.

Two supermarket wines worth buying this week.

First, Solefino from Waitrose. A blend of Trebbiano and Chardonnay from Emilia-Romagna. Fresh and citrusy, but with ripe fruit and texture to punch well above its weight.

Then Dopo Nero from Morrisons. A bold, with plenty of ripe dark fruit and a soft, generous finish. Nothing complicated, just a seriously drinkable red that will work brilliantly with pizza, pasta or anything coming off the barbecue.

Two very different wines, both offering excellent value and both firmly among my supermarket wines of the week.

Australia is able to produce enormous quantities of affordable wine because much of its volume comes from vast, warm inland regions such as Riverland, Riverina and Murray Darling.

These areas have reliable sunshine, relatively dry conditions and access to irrigation, allowing producers to grow grapes consistently and at higher yields. Large vineyards, machine harvesting, modern wineries, efficient transport and the ability to blend fruit from different areas all help keep production costs down and create a consistent style year after year.

That is how huge brands like Yellow Tail can produce millions of bottles and appear on shelves around the world.

But this is only one side of Australian wine. Look a little higher on the shelf and you will start to find wines still produced at scale but offering far more character, expression of the grape and sense of place.

My advice based on all of my experience?: leave the Yellow Tail behind, spend a few pounds more and discover what Australian wine can really do.
