Yesterday was a bittersweet day at the farm, Denise our Education officer and Barry our Maintenance man retired.

Denise our education officer had been in post here at Mudchute for over 20 years and during that time Denise has met thousands and thousands of children and young adults, changing their perceptions of the natural world and educating them further through quizzes, songs, raps and games. The impact that Denise has had is vast and immeasurable.Denise’s huge knowledge was all self taught and over the years the project development was headed up by Denise along with Tina, (who retired a few years ago). Denise you will be missed and the fantastic project that you created is in the very safe and knowledgeable hands of Shelly.

Barry has been at the farm for a good number of years too and is a very knowledgeable man turning his hand to most things and completing any task to a very high standard. Over the time at the farm Barry has saved the farm thousands of pounds with the skills that he has, everything from electrics to mechanics.

Most of all both Denise and Barry were very warm welcoming and happy to talk to our many visitors.

We wish you a very happy and well deserved retirement, thank you from us all here at the mudchute both past and present.

Over the last few months we have been working very closely with Tracey Bretherton and the British Pig Association to provide a Middlewhite boar for export to Japan! He has made the journey from Mudchute Park & Farm to Japan and is doing well. This is what rare breed conservation is about ensuring that well bred, good examples of our breeds are spread far and wide to continue the safeguarding and breeding of pedigree rare breeds both nationally and internationally. This is the first time in the history of London city farms and as far as I know RBST approved farm parks that one has bred a pedigree pig for export abroad. To think that a city farm in the east end of London has achieved this is amazing. This is why breeding pedigree registered stock matters because now out in Japan about to start his breeding life is a Mudchute revival boar. Thank you to Tracey, Grace and Nic for the numerous trips to and from London to the British Pig Association for backing such important work,to the tremendous veterinary team Hammond Vets and all of the staff and volunteers at the farm 🎉👏🏻 🐷 🇯🇵

Over the last few week we have started to get busier with visitor numbers increasing. Whilst it’s great to welcome people to the farm it also brings with it some problems. People think that they can feed the animals a whole manner of foods. It is illegal to feed farm animals catering waste this does include shop bought fruit and veg as well as other human foods, it can’t be that bad for them surely... well yes it is and the third picture shows the end result, the death of one of our rare breed Oxford Down rams,he was fed something over night, bloated and was found dead the following morning. We were planning on showing and selling him as a breeding ram later this year. Not only have we lost a much needed income from his death but more than that the farm staff team has lost an animal that they have cared for since his birth. Please, please, please do not feed the animals anything other than the special animal feed sold on the farm.

What are we doing to the hedge on the Asda path?

We are hedge laying, Hedgelaying is a country skill practised mainly in the United Kingdom and Ireland, with many regional variations in style and technique.

When we lay a hedge we are essentially regenerating the trees, allowing continuity in the hedgerow. In this way we can keep that hedge working for much longer than its natural lifetime. Without this regeneration the hedge will mature and start to die.

This old traditional rural craft helps to create a marvellous habitat for a range of animal species such as small mammals and birds.

Here is a before picture and what we are working towards with the after.

Happy New Year everyone and what a great start that we had to 2022 down on the farm. On the second of January we welcomed a beautiful Dexter calf to the farm. Our Dexter Cow Kyri gave birth mid morning on the 2nd after eating her breakfast as usual, both mother and calf are doing well. This is Kyri’s second calf and she is a fantastic mum. Twiglet our other Dexter cow is ever protective of them both and she is due to calf later in the year.

Mudchute Park & Farm - Rare Breeds Programme

Please help us by completing a brief questionnaire about our Rare Breeds Programme (whether or not you took part!). It should only take a few moments and your feedback is greatly appreciated.

The project focused on the Rare breeds programme. It combined the conservation of rare breeds livestock with traditional rural crafts, such as spinning, weaving, dyeing, blacksmithing, and drystone walling, to but name a few. The UK harbours a fantastic diversity of native breeds of livestock, and w...

Please everyone do not be tempted to feed any of our animals any fruit, vegetables or human food to our animals.

The ban on feeding kitchen waste to livestock was introduced after the devastation of foot and mouth disease - the most likely cause of the 2001 outbreak was catering waste being fed to #Pigs. Read more about what you can feed pigs: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/keeping-a-pet-pig-or-micropig
