The MiniCrops Story
MiniCrops is a leading food technology brand, part of Vertical Future - a technology company with a mission to make people healthier. Founded in 2016 by Jamie and Marie Burrows - a young husband-and-wife-couple living in London - the team now has over 30 committed staff.
We grow high quality produce in high-tech indoor production facilities across London. Our product range includes microgreens, herbs, baby leaf, full-sized lettuce varieties, and edible flowers.
We refuse to use pesticides, and we adopt more efficient processes than traditional farms. Because we farm in the city, we also deliver food to you with fewer food miles - meaning that we're doing our bit for the environment.
MiniCrops also provides jobs and educates Londoners on the importance of food sustainability and the environment. We create local and national links with charities, schools, research organisations, and government.

These beauties are a labour of love but so worth it! Crisp sweet pastry with a touch of orange zest, treacle tart filling, candy orange peel, dehydrated orange, charred orange, creme fraiche and garnish with MiniCrops micro sorrel and violas. So addictive!

"They grow more than 60 varieties, from mini daikon radish to red amaranth. Some, like dill, are indistinguishable from those you’d grow at home, while others sound familiar but look anything but.... The micro leeks are small, spindly antennae-like shoots; the kale and broccoli a pretty assembly of tiny, heart shaped leaves."
Clare Finney takes a tour of trader MiniCrops's warehouse in Depford and discovers a world of flavour that could have significant implications on urban food production.

It's new trader MiniCrops's 2nd day with us. If you're in the Market, head over and say hello. Their selection of micro greens are fresh, sustainable, sold in plant-based packaging, grown in London, full of nutrients, but - above anything else - DELICIOUS! More than just a flourish on a plate, they are the star of any dish. Give them a try!

Such an honour to be part of MiniCrops launch party. We designed a menu to showcase their flavoursome microgreens. We used their micro broccoli in a chickpea blini with avocado mousse and pomegranate, micro kohlrabi in a Korean beef taco, micro leeks in a leek and asparagus tartlet, micro mizuna for tuna tataki, micro basil and micro kale to make a salsa verde for seared lamb crostini, Rioja radish for a torched mackerel with dressed crab, micro Tatsoi for a ginger and chilli prawn and micro red Giant Mustard for a beef tartare spoon with wasabi mayo and crispy black quinoa.
Hundreds of years ago most of our food would have come from Market Gardens - small farms just on the edge of the city that got supplies in to hungry workers. A thing of the past now, but with the drive to cut down on carbon footprints they could be making a comeback with a 21st century twist - courtesy of MiniCrops, as Martin Stew explains.
