Food loss is the loss of edible food at the production, post-harvest and processing stages of the food chain due to sub-optimal farming methods, poor storage and inflexible distribution or buying practices (WWF, 2022).
Food waste refers to the discard of edible foods at the retail and consumer levels. Unclear labelling, portion sizes which are too big and simply not eating everything before it goes off all contribute to food waste (WWF, 2022).

Food loss and waste is a critical global issue with serious social, environmental, and economic impacts.
Around 13% of food produced globally is lost before it reaches retailers, with an economic value of $400 billion (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)), 2023). An additional 19% is wasted by consumers and businesses (UN Environment Programme, 2024)
Food loss and waste contributes 8-10% of global GHG emissions and represents a massive waste of resources, energy, and labourโat a time when hunger and food insecurity are prevalent.

Spread awareness about this issue, start conversations and inspire action. At the individual level, you can make a conscious effort to minimise your food waste at home, and only buy what you need. You can also find innovative ways to use the odds and ends of fruit and veg that you would normally through away, such as The Guardian's Waste Not recipes: https://ow.ly/Bfxk50TfSHs
If you are a business in the food industry, you can get your fresh produce on Ample Marketplace. This helps famers and growers minimise their on-farm food loss and waste by enabling them to sell their whole harvests.
