Modal Wines

Modal Wines Modal Wines is a UK Importer of small-batch, handcrafted wines grown and produced with love and respect.

Modal scales in music sit outside the more common and ordinary major and minor scales - out of the many parallels between music and wine, this particular concept beautifully illustrates our aim at Modal Wines: to source unique wines with the right mix of edge, character, balance, and drinkability - at times surprising, but always thoroughly enjoyable. We strive to bring you distinctive and engagin

g wines from independent winemakers with a genuine passion for their craft, regardless of location or style. A deep-rooted respect for nature unites all the producers in our portfolio, whose wines are made with as little interference in the vineyards and cellar as possible

Based in Simondium near Paarl in South Africa, Angelo van Dyk of Yo El Rey works with small, organic growers from across the Cape. He produces some of the most exciting minimal intervention wines we’ve tasted from the brilliant ‘next wave’ of young producers in the country. These are winemakers who have started their own projects in recent years, and who are stamping their mark on the global wine stage with some truly astounding wines—and Angelo is one of them.

The new vintage releases of the 2024s from Yo El Rey are here, along with top ups of some of our old favourites. His new wines show a clear evolution of style and energy, and are yet another huge leap forward in vibrancy and focus.

The Nuvo Nivo family just got bigger.

We are so excited to introduce the brand new additions to the Nuvo Nivo range, a Chenin Blanc and Merlot — made by our very own Angelo of Yo El Rey Wines in South Africa.

These are wines that are meant to tick the boxes of both value and intention. They are honest drinking wines, but with a bigger story and vision behind them.

The idea with Nuvo Nivo is simple: create genuinely affordable wines that still support growers farming organically and biodynamically. Grapes that might otherwise be sold off anonymously, given a bit more care, and a bit more identity.

First up, a Chenin from Durbanville that’s barrel-fermented and aged, that balances brightness and drinkability with texture and complexity.

Next, a Merlot from Paarl, that’s light, crunchy, and chillable. Something perfect for the warmer months ahead.

Now available and listed in our May portfolio. Please DM us for more details or email [email protected]

L’Equinox has just landed — and Find Your Happy Place and Keep It Loose are ready for the summer pours. A bright, chillable red and the most incredible textured, savoury orange.

MC is one of the exciting new wave producers representing the very best of South African low intervention wine production. The wines are fresh, energetic and full of life, and ready for your BTG pours. Grab them while you can!

ASHLEIGH BARROWMAN IS BACK

Our fresh new shipment of wines from New Zealand have just landed, including the exciting new releases from Ashleigh Barrowman of Siren Wines. Ashleigh’s wines are a celebration of the fruit she gets from The Wrekin Vineyard, a 17ha organic estate that she helps farm and cultivate. The work they do here goes beyond organic, incorporating biodynamic and permaculture practices that has become a benchmark for natural farming in the Marlborough region.

For those fans who fell in love with her wines last year, we now have an exciting new addition to her line-up: The Fool. A month-long maceration of Chardonnay that is textured, balanced, and shows the right amount of restraint whilst still being incredibly generous. Her wines continue to blow us away with their precision and energy, and The Fool is yet another arrow in her quiver that embraces that, and more.

NEW VINTAGE RELEASE—BEN ADAMS

Ben Adams is probably one of the most exciting winemakers in the English scene at the moment, and you’d be forgiven to have never heard of him. Ben isn’t one of those ‘rockstar’ winemakers. He has no website, and no Instagram. He isn’t trying to be ironic or cool, but rather his focus and passion lies with his vineyards. There’s no ego here, just a passionate farmer, striving to do better.

Ben is first and foremost a grape farmer, and he happens to make wine as a consequence of farming these grapes. Some of this fruit is sold to friends and colleagues, and some he keeps to produce a small amount of wine under his own label, Enmill Field (the name of the lieu dit where he works in Hampshire). ‘There is a lot of reward in selling fruit’, he says. In a recent conversation with fellow English winemaker, Daniel Ham, he mentioned that it is hard to stress just how very important and impressive Ben’s work is. His attention to detail and commitment to natural farming is inspiring, and he harnesses this energy in the mind-blowing zero-zero wines that he produces.

We’ll be showing the new vintage releases of both his sparkling Colfondo Chardonnay and still red blend made from Pinot Noir and Meunier at our Light + Bright trade tasting next Monday 27 April. These wines move fast, so register today to get a chance to taste them before they’re gone.

Big news is landing soon… all the way from Aotearoa.

We’re seriously excited to be bringing in the wines from Alex Craighead — one of the leading lights of New Zealand’s natural farming and wine scene. Alex farms organically, works with a light touch in the cellar, and crafts wines that brim with the energy that is unmistakably a product of their place. It’s hard to put into words just how special these vineyards are, nestled away in a quiet nook of Nelson that is lush, green and attended to with the utmost care.

We are lucky enough to be working across 3 of Alex’s ranges - the familiar Kindeli, the superb value Ojisan wines and finally - the culmination of his years of forward-thinking winemaking experience and loving cultivation of his home block of vines - the brand new Alex Craighead Wines.

They’ll be landing with us very soon, and we will be showing these at our upcoming Light + Bright trade tasting. Register today to be among the first to taste them. DM us or email [email protected]

This month we introduced the third release from our very own ‘Nuvo Nivo’ project, a deliciously pure and impressively affordable Barbera we created with Paolo from Cascina Zerbetta. With this particular bottling, we have been able to take a large quantity of Barbera that Paolo was unsure about releasing as his flagship ‘La Zerbetta’ due to its slightly earlier picking and lighter extraction style. By solving this dilemma for him, we are able to offer you a ridiculously tasty medium-bodied Barbera that has all the hallmarks of his corner of Monferrato—an interplay of depth, of fruit and of earth, supported by a refreshing acidity and beautifully integrated tannins.

Not many of you know this but Paolo was actually the very first grower that was approached back in 2016 when Nic was in the initial stages of setting up Modal Wines, so it felt appropriate to name the wine ‘Origine’ and hint at the ‘roots’ of this beautiful and long collaboration with the artwork on the label.

We will be pouring this and many more wines at BTG price points at our tasting, The Glassables, this Monday. RSVP to [email protected]. Trade only.
