A little Lower Marsh history for your feed 👀

Before the market street we know today, this area was part of Lambeth Marsh.

This first image shows Lambeth Palace from the south, c.1685, with Lambeth Marsh stretching behind it. Historic records show Lower Marsh on James de la Feuille’s c.1690 map as a lane lined with cottages and small holdings crossing the marsh. As London grew, the marsh was drained and the area gradually built over, eventually becoming the friendly, bustling street market we know today.

The Market’s name stands as a reminder of what used to be here. 🧡

A bit of old London, hidden in plain sight.

New year, same roots 🌱

Lower Marsh Market has been part of Waterloo’s story since the early-19th century, when street traders first set up along this historic road.

For over 150 years, it’s been a place to shop, eat and connect - from early produce stalls serving local workers to today’s vibrant mix of street food, independent makers and community spirit.

Same street. Same heart.
2026, we’re ready for another chapter 💛
