Introducing Low Caf Rarities.

Since launching our Low Caf subscription - the only naturally low-caffeine coffee subscription in the UK - we’ve been sourcing low-caf coffees across rare varieties and species including Laurina, Aramosa, Laurina hybrids and Excelsa.

Now, our Low Caf subscription is splitting into two clearer paths.

Low Caf Explorer is our original low-caf subscription: Aramosa, Excelsa and Laurina-hybrid coffees, typically around 0.6–1.0% caffeine.

Low Caf Rarities is our new ultra-low caf subscription: led by Laurina variety coffees, typically around 0.4–0.6% caffeine.

Laurina is rare, low-yielding and difficult to grow - and it contains significantly less caffeine than any other coffee variety we source. Producing exceptional Laurina takes more work, costs more, and deserves its own category.

Splitting the subscription also means tighter caffeine bands, so once you find the level that works for you, there will be less variation from coffee to coffee.

Both subscriptions are naturally low caffeine, sourced from exceptional farms, lab tested for caffeine and small batch roasted in Peckham.

Costa provides an estimate for these drinks of 400mg caffeine - equal to the recommended daily limit.

🍄I tried mushroom coffee so you don't have to.

Mushroom coffee is a blend of instant coffee and functional mushrooms - marketed as a calmer, healthier alternative to regular coffee. But do the claims stack up?

The health claims around the common 'functional' mushrooms are based on early stage research and using doses higher than anything in a commercial product. Meanwhile regular coffee has one of the strongest evidence bases of any drink we consume - it's consistently linked to reduced risk or type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's and liver conditions.

The one real benefit of mushrooms coffee? A controlled and gentle caffeine intake. Which you can achieve without the mushrooms - or the price tag. A half caf or naturally lower caffeine coffees gets you there, without the compromise on flavour.

Free Filter Friday.

Once a month we serve free filter coffee at MULTI STORY café at the top of Peckham Levels.

Alongside the brews we host a mini coffee cupping, usually exploring decaf and naturally low-caffeine coffees.

This week we tasted three low caffeine coffees: Laurina, Aramosa and Excelsa.

It’s a relaxed way to learn about coffee, caffeine and cupping — no experience needed.

Brewing Sugarcane EA process decaf using a pour over can be challenging, as the water drawdown can be excessively slow.

For coffees decaffeinated using this method, the more brittle nature of the roasted beans means a high amount of fine particles are produced when grinding, which migrate to the bottom of the filter bed.

To speed up water draw-down you can use a brewer that encourages fast flow (such as the Orea V4 with fast base attachment) and/or grind a little coarser.

This is the one person Orea recipe we are using, with the fast base attachment.

Dose: 15g
Water: 250mL
Grind: Medium-Coarse (25 clicks on Comandante)
Water Temp: 92C
Target Brew Time: 2:15-2:45
Pouring Guide: Bloom 30mL for 30s; then 2 x 110mL pours
