It’s very important to manage your mental health these days, it’s been an intense 14 months from idea to now for Mabel and an even more intense last 5 months from angel funding to now preparing to scale and preseed. So here I am in Greece enjoying the views and relaxing! No one will say I didn’t try - and the truth is it’s a privilege being able to bring Mabel to life, I love it, and don’t do beach holidays. So here we are! Been too quiet on here so a lot more content to come.

Yesterday I was in Northern Italy passing by the manufacturers of the Mabel base units so popped in for a catch up. Ended up having an impromptu meeting with Mauro the owner and CEO, shared an idea for a future collaboration (it is so lovely to work with true entrepreneurs who say “why not!” to ideas rather than “why?”) and then it transpired Mauro also owns an award winning w**ery close by and graciously offered to show me around. What was so fun was seeing how he had folded in elements of innovation into his w**e making process including his temperature control systems, a patented barique made of fossilized Slavonian (NOT Slovenian) wood. Each bottle has an RFID chip in its cork so you can instantly trace the provenance of the w**e and process. Ideas a plenty. For me this is a ‘holiday’ and way more fun than sitting on a beach doing nothing. It’s a privilege to get the chance to wake up everyday and build something you are passionate about. It also reinforces a very simple but often ignored principle in business. Work with people who inspire you and who you WANT to work with. Investors who you want to reward, suppliers whom you want to support, employees whom you want to succeed. Sounds obvious, have a think about the number of people who dislike their investors, go for the cheapest supplier and fall out, employ people they don’t actually care about.

(Disclaimer I wasn’t dressed to meet Mauro, I would normally be more appropriately attired!)

My goodness it has been an intense few weeks and not enough posting here. Things are moving at a pace. Our chef is taking a well earned week off so for the only time ever we pause food ops and take a week to reflect. But even though this Mabel is on break it can still look good and communicate ;-) No need to leave an empty unit in the corner is there! MVP done. Time to scale! More food, more SKUs, more categories, more locations, the app live. It’s going to be a very busy Q3! Huge thanks to our friends at Arada London for helping put that sticker on the front I was dreading having to help. 😉

In the early stages of any business, the desire for positive feedback is overwhelming. You seek affirmation that the year of hard work was worthwhile and that your ideas were valid. Truth is, however, while positive feedback is important, the real value lies in constructive criticism that allows for improvement.

Recently, I received a message from someone expressing disappointment in a Mabel sandwich, which had previously been praised as ‘amazing’ and ‘bloody fantastic.’ It felt like a punch to the gut, but I was immensely grateful they took the time to share their thoughts. I immediately tried the sandwich myself and noticed something was indeed off on that day.

I collaborated with our chef Jamie for a tasting session, and we identified a discrepancy in our process on Mondays compared to other days. This insight not only helped us improve the sandwich but also refined our operations, and it inspired an evolution of our food philosophy, adding ‘generosity’ as a new filter to always view any dish through. Within a day, Jamie had evolved the product into a new, larger, and better sandwich, with a more robust process enabling consistency. A better process and product - for the long term.

Receiving feedback that highlights shortcomings is never easy, but it is invaluable. By the way, this sandwich features bread baked daily in London with only four ingredients and no UPFs. The chicken and ham hock is high-welfare native breeds from North Yorkshire farms. The salad is all British-grown. Now, can you tell me where the ingredients in your lunch came from?

And there we are. Day one! Mabel is up and running and full. Loads of learnings especially in terms of packaging and comms but we are off and running and for the first time money is coming IN to the business. From here we just get better and better.

MABEL IS LIVE! What an effort to bring a consumer brand, a food services business and a tech business to life in less than three months, with £100k investment, a core team of three and some superb off shore support from our dev team. Very proud moment and for me Jason (founder) the realisation of a vision that’s been 14 months in the making. The hard work starts now 😅
