I was lucky enough to be invited to attend the What’s New In Bordeaux virtual tasting hosted by Richard Bampfield and Sabine Silvestrini this week. They dug into how the Bordeaux region is evolving to face into the issues of climate change and the changing taste profiles of the global consumer. We tasted through 6 wines which were all fantastic with the two standouts for me being the Dourthe No 1 rose and the Volcelest Canon-Fronsac. It was a very informative and well put together tasting.

I’ve just finished up my second which was fantastic. I judges 4 days this year, tasting over 350 wines from 21 different countries. I can’t wait to look up the wines the we have gold medals to when the results are released 🤤. Thank you for organising and running such a great show and thank you to all the people who judged on a panel with me. .yilmaz_

Had a great tasting and tour today. The Grand Reserve was looking amazing with 5 years on lees it is pure autolytic hedonism. Russell was a really knowledgeable host who made the tour very engaging.

Friday calls for a fine pour 🍷✨ Winding down the week with this 2006 Stags’ Leap Cabernet Sauvignon as I gear up for Wine Paris, starting Monday 💪. This beauty is aging gracefully—still plenty of fruit, beautifully interwoven with classic secondary Cabernet characters 🤤. Can’t wait for a week of incredible wines, connections, and discoveries. I had a fantastic time learning more about the Xarel-lo grape variety from DO Penedès last night. Did you know that the Penedès region will be 100% organic from 2025?

The wine styles ranged from sparkling to fresh and light through to beautiful aged and oaked styles.

My standouts included:
2022 Inhòspit by Alaina and Sardà, which was light and crisp with some beautiful texture and a hint of salinity running through the wine.
2022 Amfores by Loxarel, fermented in a 720-litre clay amphora, which had lush white fruits on the nose and a rich mouthfeel.
2012 Electio by Parés Baltà, which was served from magnum and which showed Xaerl-lo is very capable of ageing gracefully.

DO Penedès is a wine region with a very long history of making wine, which isn’t getting in the way of it progressing into one of the most exciting regions for white wine in the world right now.

Thank you for inviting me to the launch of the 2018 L’Inattendue. Every year this wine is produced from a singular year, grape and sub-region. This vintages’ “unexpected” details are it is produced from 100% Chardonnay from the Grand Cru vineyard of Chouilly in the Cote des Blanc. This is a classy wine showing great acid structure balanced by the time in bottle, on lees. The nose shows classic Chardonnay characters of apples and pineapple with complexity from the brioche and vanilla notes. The pallet is racy and makes you want to take another sip. All in all, a great wine that bucks the standard Champenois production methods of blending regions and vintages. 🤤🤤
