This week was unexpectedly rich in learning.
East India Company, Britain’s naval trade routes, taxes and of course, the role of tea in all of these.
Tea is a topic I’ll never stop learning about, and the more you learn, the more there is to learn.

Did you know that in the 18th century Britain the tax on tea was around 120%? It was so high, yet the government didn’t raise much revenue from it, as most people bought smuggled tea. Eventually the tax was brought down to 12.5%, wiping out the smuggling almost overnight.

“I wish I could do this all day”.

I hear this after every single tea blending session and it fills my heart with joy that I get to share my passion for tea at the Nauteas blending experiences with our guests.

Few things are more deeply British than tea. Tea and London share one of the most iconic associations in history, woven into British culture and identity for centuries.

This one was particularly special with the stunning backdrop of London Embankment from the OXO Tower.

Nothing ever exists in isolation.
Just like a wing forms part of a bird, culture is formed through a myriad of energies, colours, moments that trigger your senses.
My recent trip in India confirmed that the chai that’s served ubiquitously in every home, town and roadside is intense…just like the Indian culture itself.
As someone said, ‘India is not for beginners’. And I feel fortunate to experience the intensity every time through my own lens and add another brushstroke to my canvas of memories.

Christmas is coming, so I’d like to share a thought - or rather, a wish - with all the children (and maybe even some adults too):

Be naughty, and don’t always settle for nice. Set your own boundaries, carve your own path and know your worth.

And one more: don’t look to Santa (or any other authority figure) to decide what ‘naughty’ and ‘nice’ should mean to you.

Over 20 years ago, when we just arrived in London and were looking to create our first home, my mum, sister and I walked into an antique shop, drawn in by a beautiful accessory.

Little did we know that we will walk out with two new friends and, crucially, a beautiful Indian wooden table which since then developed a gravitational pull of its own. It became the centre point of hundreds of tea parties, dinners fancy and casual, beautiful settings and big messes. My grandma’s tea cups continue their sparkling life on it and my mum’s innovative tea time cakes are always something we look forward to.
