Found this little common lizard scuttling about at the side of one of my hives up on the moor, I've only ever seen these up in the Highlands before. That's a lizard and an adder in the last couple of weeks, I wonder what will be next?

Yesterday afternoon I safely removed a colony of bees from a compost bin for the home owner.
Although its only a small colony, the comb contained brood and eggs and a viable queen and im hopeful that with a bit of feeding to boost its stores, it will be in a good position to overwinter. They are now in a hive in my garden so I can keep an eye on them over the coming days.

This afternoon, I visited in the Netherlands, where the owner Aad, kindly showed me round his hives and explained his setup, the bees were so calm, no protective equipment or smoker were required. As well as bee keeping equipment, they sell many different varieties of honey (which you can taste and buy). Well worth a visit if you are ever in the area.

Last night I took our hives up on their annual trip to the moors for the heather honey. The heather honey takes a lot of work to get but its well worth it.
This picture may look like it was taken at sunrise, but it was actually around midnight with a full moon!

The ling heather is beginning to flower on the moors, and the hives will need moved up within the next couple of weeks, so the bees can gather the heather nectar.

Lovely way to spend time in this good weather preparing the ground for the hives to sit on.

Saw a young adder sunning itself, but it was too quick for a photo 🐍

Today, I began the process of melting down old frames to retrieve the wax.

This will be filtered 2 or 3 times so that i am left with pure bees wax.

As you can see, the local bumble bees are loving it 🐝

Tommorrow we have a stall at the longniddry gala. Why not come along and try some of our delicious locally produced, single source, raw honey, straight from the hive to a jar 🍯

Its spring honey extraction time. Our frames are uncapped, spun and poured into buckets to settle, before being coarsley filtered and jarred so that they get to you in a totally delicious natural form 🍯
