On VE Day 80, we are remembering the sacrifices made of all who served in the war, particularly those who fished the seas, facing the dangers and threats of u-boats and mines.

During both World War I and World War II, fishermen and their vessels played a crucial, often overlooked, role in the war effort. They contributed to the war in several ways, including arming fishing boats for defense, participating in the evacuation of troops (like at Dunkirk), and maintaining food supplies for the nation.

Despite all this, our fishermen continued to provide food, and today partaking in the great tradition of eating fish and chips is another nod to these brave men.

All at the museum raise their hats in recognition, and look forward to showing you what it was all about. Do come and see us.
