I went to the new M&S Food at Ludlow today. Some friends have been every day since it opened no names Nina Loud Bones
It’s pretty impressive. 80% of the car park was full. It was really busy inside.
From my days working Sainsbury's I know the ripples this will have put through the other supermarkets nearby… and I love it. People talking with their feet and whether intentional or not, purchasing higher welfare and organic meat.
The presence of organic products was strong in the store, not surprising given that in 2025 the UK organic food and drink market saw its 14th consecutive year of growth, rising 4.2% according to the Soil Association with one key reason shoppers are switching is health.
Not all things are equal though. Just note that although all M&S FRESH chicken is higher welfare and compliant with the Compassion in World Farming Better Chicken Commitment, not all of its frozen and cooked products are. But progress over perfection is the name of the game.
Even though a “Higher Welfare” chicken has a better life than a normal supermarket chicken, it’s still lives fully indoors and is a long way from a system which regenerates. If you want to be part of something that puts back more than it takes then a regenerative organic chicken is where it needs to be. And that can’t be purchased from M&S. Oh and a shout out to the organic Daylesford chicken in M&S. Great to see it stocked. I worked there for a while too. Still don’t understand why they use a picture of a laying hen on their meat chicken packet but hey ho 🤷
