We are headed to Sicily for this week’s wine. This grape is delicious and one that, if you haven’t already tried it, you absolutely need to.

This grape has been grown on the island of Sicily since the Greeks were there way back when. But in modern times it has remained relatively under the radar and it is only just starting to get the recognition it deserves. For a long time in the 20th century it was used to give a bit of heft to northern Italian wines with fruit and alcohol department. You would rarely find it as a single varietal wine.

Change came in the 90s when Sicilian producers started to focus on lesser yields and higher quality. They proved that it could hold it’s own and didn’t need to be a grape that was just used to add ‘a bit of bulk’. It can produce elegant, fruit driven, meaty wines that are impressing wine lovers all over the world.

Luckily for the wine growers of Sicily, this is a pretty hardy grape. It can cope under extreme heat and drought which is not an uncommon experience. Vineyards in Sicily are often subjected to 45 degree+ temperatures in July and August, with their latitude being further south than parts of Tunisia.

This particular wine also has a bit of ‘appasimento’ magic. Translating to ‘withering’, this is a classic Italian technique where grapes are dried out to concentrate the flavour of the grapes. It is a technique most famously used with Amarone but is used to great effect here. A portion of the grapes are dried out for 3-4 weeks after picking, till they have lost about 30% of their weight. The juices from these grapes are then vinified separately.

Therefore, in the bottle you can expect lovely juicy fruit, lots of dark cherries and blackcurrants. It is a powerful wine but delightfully approachable with super smooth tannins. You could pair this with all sorts of big flavours from a Friday night pizza to your next BBQ or some lovely hard, mature cheese.

This is a wine that is great value for money. Usually £13, for this week it will be £11.70. As always, try before you buy today and tomorrow in our Yorkersgate Shop.

The penguin has been stocked back up and is ready and raring for your summer BBQs, even if the weather is not quite as on it as it was!

If you haven't met our favourite penguin yet then pop in for a bottle of this fruity, spritzy red and get in your fridge! It might sound odd, but you've tried it you will be part of the Chill Bill convert crew, of which there are now many in and around Malton.

This week takes us to Rioja, not for the classic Tempranillo but for a crisp, dry white wine. White wines from this region account for 10% of what is produced and they are predominantly made from Viura, the grape that produces this week’s wine.

The production of white wine in Rioja used to be a lot higher. Before phylloxera struck most of Europe’s vines the region was focused on both red and white wines. However, when Bordeaux’s vines were wiped out, the winemakers of Rioja saw an opportunity to capitalise and began to focus on red wines too fill the gap in the market. White wines have stayed a quiet supporting act for a long time but interest in these wines are just starting to pick up again.

Viura, commonly known as Macabeo elsewhere, is grown all over Spain (and a little bit in France) and is well known for its versatility. It is one of the key grapes in Cava production and is a grape that can be made into fresh, zippy white wines whilst also being a great white wine to age in oak barrels. In Rioja it also used to be commonly used in red wines to add acidity, however this is much less common now.

In Rioja there are three regions and this week’s wine comes from Rioja Alta which translates to ‘High Rioja’. Unsurprisingly this area is the one with the highest altitude which is an advantage for this grape as it helps maintain the acidity with the slightly cooler temperatures.

Therefore, the Puerta Vieja Blanco has a fresh and fruity nose with notes of white fruit and citrus. There is a subtle floral note with a touch of spice that is carried through to the palate. This is a perfect wine for sipping in the sunshine with a few snacks or maybe with a light meal with fish or chicken. It also goes quite well with mildly spiced Asian food if you wanted to mix it up a bit.

Another great value bottle - usually £10 but for this week it will be £9. Try before you buy today and tomorrow at our Yorkersgate shop.

We might have sold out of Cap D’age but we’ve still got this beauty which I have loved for years. Vinho Verde Rosé isn’t the most common thing but try this one and you’ll be sold.

It’s packed full of strawberries and encapsulates summer in a glass.

The perfect midweek treat to enjoy in this glorious weather (yes, it is ducking away briefly tomorrow but it is coming back!). Made by the same guys who make our ever popular Pet-Nat, this is an off dry sparkling that is full to the brim with elderflower loveliness. At only 7% ABV it is light and bright and will be a lovely, summery note to your week.

We only have a few cases of this stuff and it is a bargain at £9 so be quick because once it's gone, it's gone!

Hello and Happy Friday! What a weekend we have shaping up. How many times do you get a Bank Holiday and wall to wall sunshine overlapping?!... Due to this unprecedented occasion we have a wine that, for many, will need little introduction but couldn't be more of a sunny Bank Holiday wine if it tried....

Cap D’agde Désir De Rosé

Admittedly, this has been wine of the week before. Back in July 2024, the day before my brother's wedding and it was chilling in fridges to be served at the wedding and in the shop. Once again some lovely weather was forecast and we thought this might be a winner. Well. It certainly was. Between it being a popular wine of the week and being equally popular at the wedding (someone was seen with a bottle and a straw...), we were completely sold out. So this a warning. If you are feeling rose this weekend and want something that it super drinkable and exceptionally good value for money then get in quick. We do have a fair bit and this time there is no wedding, but you never know...

For those that haven't tried this wine before, a few headlines:

1) It is from the Langedouc, slightly further west than Provence where the really trendy stuff comes from. It is ever so slightly fuller on the palate than the classical Provencal style but this makes it more helpful for point 2.

2) It is a very versatile wine. Perfect for sipping on its own but put it with light meals or a BBQ and it is going to be equally lovely.

3) The bottle has a glass stopper closure - this needs pushing up from underneath, rather than pulling up from above. This stumped me the first time I came across one of these but they are very reusable bottles.

4) Finally...in my last email in 2024 I made the claim that it was potentially 'one of the most drinkable bottles that we sell' and I would stand by this nearly 2 years later.

This is easy drinking wonderfulness in a bottle and you can't do much better when it is forecast to be 26 degrees and bright sunshine in Malton on a BH Monday in May!

Just to make it even better, it comes in at less than £10 this week. Usually £10, it will be £9 all week.

As always, try before you buy today and tomorrow at the Yorkersgate Shop.
