We are headed to Sicily for this week’s wine. This grape is delicious and one that, if you haven’t already tried it, you absolutely need to.
This grape has been grown on the island of Sicily since the Greeks were there way back when. But in modern times it has remained relatively under the radar and it is only just starting to get the recognition it deserves. For a long time in the 20th century it was used to give a bit of heft to northern Italian wines with fruit and alcohol department. You would rarely find it as a single varietal wine.
Change came in the 90s when Sicilian producers started to focus on lesser yields and higher quality. They proved that it could hold it’s own and didn’t need to be a grape that was just used to add ‘a bit of bulk’. It can produce elegant, fruit driven, meaty wines that are impressing wine lovers all over the world.
Luckily for the wine growers of Sicily, this is a pretty hardy grape. It can cope under extreme heat and drought which is not an uncommon experience. Vineyards in Sicily are often subjected to 45 degree+ temperatures in July and August, with their latitude being further south than parts of Tunisia.
This particular wine also has a bit of ‘appasimento’ magic. Translating to ‘withering’, this is a classic Italian technique where grapes are dried out to concentrate the flavour of the grapes. It is a technique most famously used with Amarone but is used to great effect here. A portion of the grapes are dried out for 3-4 weeks after picking, till they have lost about 30% of their weight. The juices from these grapes are then vinified separately.
Therefore, in the bottle you can expect lovely juicy fruit, lots of dark cherries and blackcurrants. It is a powerful wine but delightfully approachable with super smooth tannins. You could pair this with all sorts of big flavours from a Friday night pizza to your next BBQ or some lovely hard, mature cheese.
This is a wine that is great value for money. Usually £13, for this week it will be £11.70. As always, try before you buy today and tomorrow in our Yorkersgate Shop.
