Have you ever had a “gut feeling”?
Think about getting butterflies before an important meeting, feeling nauseous when you’re nervous or losing your appetite during a stressful period.
These are familiar examples of just how closely our gut and brain can be connected.
Your digestive system contains its own extensive network of nerve cells, known as the enteric nervous system. It’s so complex that you’ll sometimes hear it described as our “second brain.”
And communication works both ways.
Your brain can influence what’s happening in your gut, while signals originating in the gut can also travel back to the brain.
