Veg Box People

Veg Box People We supply our Manchester-based customers with fantastic local and certified organic veg, every week. If you have any questions, get in touch.

Here at Veg Box People we like to think we do things a little bit differently. We are members of the Manchester Veg People cooperative, and as much as our veg as possible comes from their growers, based as close as three miles from the city centre. On top of this, our veg is ethical, too- we make sure that our farmers get regular demand and a fair price for their produce, so they can keep doing wh

at they do best- growing great veg. For more information about the boxes we offer, check out our website. We'd love to hear from you!

This weeks Local Legend of the Week - aubergines from Lyncrof Farm ๐Ÿ˜

While the size of some of the produce we've seen recently has suffered quite severely due to the record-breaking drought, these chonky boi aubergines have thankfully not!๐Ÿ†

We've had some great stuff from Lyncrof Farm recently, primo & savoy cabbages, pak choi, but aubergines are always a particular treat.

And if you want to make an extra special treat, here's a quick recipe for the best, most decadent version of sticky aubergine we know of...

Chop aubergines into decent sized chunks, then roast till crispy.
Mix finely chopped garlic, soy sauce, toasted sesame oil, rice wine vinegar, maple syrup, and miso paste together, pour on roasted aubergines - return to oven for 5 mins at 200 degrees!

A level of deliciousness that feels illegal ๐Ÿคค๐Ÿ˜ˆ

The British aubergine season isn't too long (July - October... certainly not as long as we'd like!) so make the most of these homegrown beauties while you can ๐Ÿ˜

This weeks Local Legend of the Week - batavia lettuces from Kindling Farm ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿคฉ

These stunners are some of the most visually striking produce we've come across - with vibes of cheerlead pom-poms, or extravagant layered ballgowns, there's something extra special about their look ๐Ÿ˜

And picked from the fields of Kindling Farm just 24 hours before they arrive at your collection point, they couldn't be fresher!

A perfect base for delicious summer salads, and more than one, 'cause these beauties are flippin' massive! ๐Ÿ˜… Packing and transporting them isn't exactly the easiest, but definitely worth it.

And even with this record-breaking heat & humidity we're struggling through, in our escalating climate crisis, they're pretty hardy and last surprisingly well for leafy greens. Though of course keep refrigerated whenever possible, it *is* hot out here! ๐Ÿฅต

Also... introducing yet another local legend... Chloe!
Seen here marvellously modelling these incredible lettuces, Chloe is the latest addition to our veg box team, and we're very happy to have her ๐Ÿฅฐ

Enjoy!

They don't call it RAINBOW chard for nowt! ๐Ÿคฉ

And the yellow of these yellow courgettes, it's almost *too* yellow, ya know? Like, indecently, obscenely yellow... ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ˜‚

We've had some really spectacular looking produce coming out of into our bags this week - picked less than 24 hours before it's ready for collection at your chosen Mancunian collection point.

When produce reaches you this fresh, and is picked when properly ripe and ready, it's so much more nutritious when it makes it onto your plate, as well as so much more delicious!

Local, poisen-free, and pushing agroecological food sovereignty foward ๐Ÿฅณ

But seriously we've just been a bit mesmerised by the colours this week ๐ŸŒˆ๐ŸŒˆ๐ŸŒˆ๐ŸŒˆ๐ŸŒˆ ๐Ÿฅฐ

We hope you've enjoyed them just as much โ˜บ๏ธ

This week's Local Legend of the Week - spring onions from .harvest ๐Ÿ˜

We're incredibly excited to have another local northwest grower supplying to us directly, as .harvest have for the first time this week ๐Ÿ˜Š

And the produce did not disappoint, at all! Just look at those spring onions! Possibly the biggest we've ever seen - really puts the piddling limp little nothingy doo-dahs you get in supermarkets to absolutely shame! ๐Ÿ˜„

We l-o-v-e spring onions, another great versatile all-rounder that you can stick in almost anything, cooked or raw, that is just instant guaranteed flavour boosting ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

We also got some beautiful salad bags from .harvest this week, we really couldn't have been more impressed with the produce quality ๐Ÿ™‚

And also... introducing the wonderful Anna - pictured here modelling these epic spring onions - who has recently joined our team ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿฅฐ

This weeks Local Legend of the Week - courgettes from ๐Ÿฅณ

Picked straight from the field the day before they make their way to you - it's hard to get fresher, so more nutritious and delicious, more local, or more certifiably organic than this! ๐Ÿฅฐ

Like when many things come into season in full force, you can end up with a bit of a *glut*, and depending on the produce in question, this can present greater or lesser challenges ๐Ÿ˜…

But with such a truly versatile ol' reliable as courgette, it's no problem at all.

Stick 'em in your stews and stir-frys and soups, your currys and casseroles, and even cakes!

You can even call them "zucchinis", if you value diversity in your language as much as in your agroecology ๐Ÿ˜‰

Real appreciation for these shiny green beauties ๐Ÿฅ’ and for all the farm workers working away in this intense heat to pick them all for us! ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸฝโœŠ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝ

Thanks !

Local Legend of the Week - broad beans from Market Garden at Woodbank, Stockport!

We love these little critters - whether cooked, raw, or blitzed up into a fresh bean dip, broad beans are such such an ol' reliable.

Beans are the future ๐Ÿฅฐ

We must totally transform our food system towards the long-term sustainability of agroecological food sovereignty - an essential part of this is shifting away from poisen/petrochemical "conventional" agricultue, to organic production.

Another essential element is dramatically increasing domestic food production - we currently import over 40% of our food, and for fresh produce it's over 50%!

Which brings us to another equally necessary component of the transformation - a paradigm shift towards more plant-based diets.

The Sustainable Food Trust report from 2024 was very clear about this necessity.
While it didn't call for a transition to a fully vegan diet, it did acknowledge the need to eliminate the ecologically appalling & morally abominable highly-intensive industrial animal facilities we call "factory farms".
And given that the *vast* majority of animal products come from factory farms, shifting to fully agroecological animal farming will necessitate dramatic reductions in our consumption - in the case of chicken and pig meat, between 80-90% reductions!

And what must this dramatic reduction in consumption of animal protein be paired with? A massive increase in plant protein!
Beans beans beans! ๐Ÿ˜
The same sustainable food report called for an over 200% increase in a consumption of beans and other pulses!
So we need to massively increase local agroecological production of all kinds of pulses and legumes.

And given that we currently use slightly over 50% (๐Ÿ˜ฎ!) of cropland in this country to grow animal freed (all thoseanimals crushed into factory farms need feeding...), there is huge scope for radically *increasing* domestic production of fruits, vegetables and legumes, whilst *also* engaging in massive ecological restoration.

It's win win win!

Honorable mention to who are really doing absolutely awesome work on this front ๐Ÿ˜

Local Legend of the Week for last week... strawberries! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

Gracing our fruit bags, these beautiful scarlett gems are such a perfect demonstration of the value of re-localising sustainable agriculture - soft fruit that is so fragile when truly ripe, so often picked wildly under ripe to facilitate more reliable long distance transportation... no need for that when it's picked that very day and come from just up t'road! Picked and delivered when actually ready to eat - more delicious, more nutritious.

Plus no nasty poisons seeping through that porous skin ๐Ÿ˜

What's not to love?!

A fresh punnet of local summer strawberries - as classicly English as getting your outdoor event pi**ed down on in the height of summer ๐Ÿ˜‚

You can currently add strawberries as an extra to your order - you've got til Tuesday to add them on for the following week.
Don't miss out! ๐Ÿ˜Š

No one puts local legend in Local Legend of the Week like - a true local legend! ๐Ÿ˜†

Libby is our most reliably reliable local grower; the produce is never anything less than top top notch quality, delivered fresh in the morning, and always exactly as ordered ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ˜‡

Growing a great range of leafy green stuffs up at Brook House Farm in Preston, on 4.5 acres, they're a perfect demonstration of well functioning small-scale local organic farming.
More of this please! ๐Ÿ‘

It really is a total pleasure working with Libby and Paul, and we are always looking forward to the season in the year when their produce becomes available again.

Having direct relationships with growers has always been our ideal and our aspiration at Veg Box People, and nowhere has it worked better than here.

We hope folks enjoyed the twin gem lettuces (modeled here by the wonderful Jules) last week as much as we did ๐Ÿ˜€

As we move towards the glorious return of more summery British produce, you can't really beat the all-time fan favourite's of beautiful bunches of fresh carrots, and vine cherry tomatoes from the Isle of Wight , which, when they hit their peak summer stride, are the best tomatoes in the country ๐Ÿ˜

We're also more aware than ever of the necessity of supporting domestic organic agriculture.

As we watch yet more illegal imperialist wars of aggression devastate people's lives, send already high prices skyrocketing even further, and seriously disrupt global supply chains, most poignantly of synthetic petrochemical fertilisers... while at the same time experiencing the hottest May day on record (34.8ยฐ! smashed the previous record by a massive 2 degrees! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ), it is more in-your-face apparent than ever the utterly urgent need to transition to organic agriculture.

Organic is the necessary heart of food sovereignty - as long as we are dependent on petrochemical fertilisers and poisons with complex, highly vulnerable supply chains, we will never have a truly sovereign or secure food system.

And it is also an absolutely foundational part of moving our societies towards real ecological sustainability, completely vital in slowing and ultimately reversing climate and ecosystem damage.

It's a win for people, communities, land, other-than-human nature, and the planet itself!

So support your local organic growers; it's never been more important โœŠ๐Ÿผ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿง…๐Ÿฅฆ๐Ÿฅ• ๐ŸŒณ
