🐔🥚 A little update from Abbey Bottom Farm! 🥚🦆

You may have noticed our new sign is up at the honesty box! ❤️

We’re now selling our chicken eggs by the dozen as well as half dozens, as we’ve added more lovely ladies to the flock. This is all part of our little project for next year, when we’re hoping to have a gorgeous selection of coloured eggs too! 🌈🥚

We’ve also made paying easier — if you don’t have cash, you can now scan the QR code or use the bank details on the sign to pay by bank transfer.

Just one little reminder 🙏🏼 this is an honesty box. Unfortunately, on a few occasions we’ve been a little short when we’ve counted up the eggs sold against the money received.

We really don’t want to have to put cameras up, so please help us keep it as the simple little honesty box it’s meant to be. ❤️

Sorry the Happy Bottom Farm egg stand has been a little slow lately! 🥚🐔🦆

This heat has been playing absolute havoc with everyone. Our ducks have basically gone on strike and decided that laying eggs is far less important than spending their days cooling themselves down in the stream! 😂🦆💦

We’ve also been using quite a lot of our chicken eggs ourselves for our breeding programmes. The good news is we’re now all finished with those and have lots of lovely little chicks to show for it. 🐣🐥

Unfortunately, the hot weather has also played havoc with our incubators, so our hatch rates haven’t been anywhere near as good as we would normally expect.

Hopefully, now things are starting to cool down a little, the girls will get back to business and the egg stand will soon be back to normal! 🥚🥚🥚

🐥 A few updates from the smallholding…

🏡 The Quack Shack has had an upgrade! The ducks have had a little makeover to their house, and we think it’s looking rather smart. 🌸🦆

🪿 You definitely can’t miss us now! After hearing “I can’t find you!” one too many times, we’ve installed a rather… tasteful (😂) goose at the end of the driveway. If you still can’t find us now, we really can’t help you!

🐣 And finally… after yet another disappointing hatch, we’re doing everything we can to give these little ones the best chance. One of our new breeding project chicks has developed splayed legs, so it’s currently sporting a little leg brace. Fingers crossed with a bit of time and TLC it’ll be up and running around with the others soon. ❤️

Some days on the smallholding are full of wins, and others bring a few challenges—but we wouldn’t have it any other way. 💚🐥🦆🌿

The kids help feed them. They name them. They cuddle them in the barn and yes we eat them. Some people think that's wrong. We think it's honest. Our children know where their food comes from. They understand that an animal gave its life so we could eat. This isn't for everyone. But for us, it's the most respectful way to live connected to our food, grateful for it and doing it with care from start to finish.

🦆 A little update on our duck eggs… 🥚

Unfortunately, our duck eggs aren’t making it to the egg stand at the moment.

The ducks are still laying well, but because they are completely free-range and live as nature intended, they only come in last thing at night and are back out at the crack of dawn. This means they’re making their own little nests out on the banks rather than using the nesting areas.

As much as we’d love to collect them all, the blackbirds are proving to be much quicker than we are and are getting to the eggs before we can!

It’s one of the little downsides of keeping our animals as naturally as possible, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. Their welfare and freedom to roam will always come first.

We’ll keep searching for those hidden nests, and hopefully we’ll have duck eggs back on the stand again soon. Thank you for your understanding and continued support! 💚

From our field → local abattoir → local butcher → our freezer → our plate. Every part of this process supports someone in our community. Our abattoir is local. Our butcher is local. When you buy from a small farm like ours, that money stays local — it doesn't go to a supermarket chain or an industrial processing plant 200 miles away. We're not a big operation. We're a family on 2 acres doing things the old-fashioned way — and keeping it all in the community while we do it.

This is the part most people don't see — and the part most farms don't like to talk about. When our lambs reach the right age, they're loaded up and taken to a small, local abattoir — a short, calm journey. No stress, no long-haul transport, no fear. They're handled gently by people we know and trust. It's not easy. It never gets easy. But we believe if you're going to eat meat, you owe it to the animal to give it the best life possible and the most respectful end you can. We could just buy a shrink-wrapped pack from the supermarket and not think about it. But we'd rather know. We'd rather be honest about it. And we'd rather do it right.

Our sheep aren't just numbers in a field. They've got names, they've got the run of the place, and they're as nosey as they look 😄At Abbey Bottom Farm, our lambs are raised right here on 2 acres of free-range pasture in Wix. They graze on good grass, they're handled daily by the family, and they live outdoors the way sheep should.This is where our lamb comes from. Not a supermarket shelf. Not a warehouse. Here.

🌿 Abbey Bottom Farm – Big plans are taking shape! 🐔🥚

Spending several weeks in hospital recovering from sepsis gave me something I don’t normally have… time to sit still. During those weeks, I spent hours planning the future of Abbey Bottom Farm, and now I’m finally starting to bring those ideas to life.

One of my biggest goals is our poultry breeding programme.

My aim is to create a flock that lays some of the most beautiful and unusual eggs imaginable – every colour of the rainbow, in as many different shades as possible. 💙💚🤎🤍

At the moment, both incubators are full. One contains a wonderful mix of breeds, from Light Sussex right through to Araucanas, while the other is dedicated entirely to our stunning French Bresse.

The French Bresse are a truly special breed, famous for their striking blue legs, pure white feathers and bright red combs – the colours of the French flag. We already have four beautiful birds in our breeding pen and are hoping to grow the flock even further. Unfortunately, the recent heatwave has played havoc with my incubators, so hatch rates haven’t been anywhere near as good as I’d normally expect. That’s farming for you!

In another pen, you’ll find our slow-growing Hubbard chickens. These aren’t bred for lots of eggs – they’re a traditional table bird, grown slowly for quality meat. Here at Abbey Bottom Farm, we’re passionate about giving every animal the very best life possible. We believe that if we’re going to produce food, it should be done ethically, with care, and by knowing exactly where it has come from.

Our baby pen is currently home to six gorgeous Brahma chicks, alongside our three Bourbon Red turkey poults, who are growing fast and full of character.

Then, in our main laying flock, we have a colourful collection of hybrids, Olive Eggers, Easter Eggers, Bluebells and several other lovely breeds, all helping us work towards the dream of producing the ultimate rainbow egg basket.

And finally… do you all remember little Nova? The tiny chick that almost didn’t make it? ❤️ Well, look at her now! She’s almost fully grown and absolutely thriving. Watching her flourish has been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey.

Looking ahead to next year, we’d love to start offering something a little different. The goal is to sell hatching eggs with a twist – carefully selected breeding lines that not only produce beautiful, colourful eggs but are also reliable, productive layers throughout the year.

Once we’ve established and refined our own breeding lines, we’ll also be looking to offer our own home-bred chicks and point-of-lay chickens, bred right here at Abbey Bottom Farm.

Abbey Bottom Farm is still very much a work in progress, but every new hatch, every new breeding group and every little success brings us one step closer to the vision I had while lying in that hospital bed.
