Sunny days in the vineyard. This week we have been overseeding and crimping our perennial rows.
The extra species added are three legumes for extra nitrogen fixing and all with extremely deep roots to help improve our soil structure and water infiltration.
We have made the decision to crimp this year so that the existing growth will still flower and set seed, even after being laid down, to increase the seed bank of the soil. The chicory was getting to around 2m tall and starting to interfere with vineyard operations, so this is a great way to semi clear the rows for working without destroying the plants and letting them all flower and set seed.
We now have a lovely blue and pink carpet down the rows.
The seeds blown in front of the crimper are Lucerne, sainfoin and red clover.
