Ballafayle Farm is located just south of Maughold Head where the Kerruish family have farmed since the 1700's. In the 1950s Ballafayle was a dairy farm, putting bottles on the doorstep across Ramsey, however, it gradually transferred to sheep & be
ef and now sheep alone. As the farm is exposed to gales from the East, we benefit from salt spray which enhances the grazing. Did you know that in France a premium is paid for salt marsh Lamb Agneau de pré-salé! Ballafayle Farm is now run by Anna Kerruish with help from Peric, Emily and 6 working dogs, who work in all weathers and between them cover 365 days a year. Other land is rented from the Government to the summit of North Barrule and east of the TT verandah. These wonderful mountain pastures are as close to nature as it is possible to be and boast every variety of herbs, grasses, heather terrain and sphagnum moss - the world's best carbon sink! We are registered with the Red Tractor Quality Assured Scheme which ensures high welfare and traceability standards and we are also part of the Isle of Man UNESCO Biosphere. Lambs are born on the lowland through April and in late April/May on the Mountain, so they are ready for processing from August onwards. Up to the year end we talk of Spring Lambs, and from New Year; Mature Lamb (hogget) which has even more flavour. Mutton on the other hand, which we do not have available, comes from older sheep. We hope you enjoy eating Ballafayle Lamb, it's as Manx as the hills! Why not check out our Twitter to keep up to date with all the latest goings on at the farm: www.twitter.com/ManxShepherdess
