🌽 Maize harvesting this afternoon! 🚜

We know it’s short notice, but farming doesn’t always go to plan! There are so many variables, from the weather to the availability of harvesting machinery, so we’ll be harvesting the maize field in front of the shop early this afternoon.

We know so many of you have watched the maize grow over the past few months and asked us about it, so it should be a brilliant sight to see! 🌽🚜

Will we have maize cobs for sale in the shop? Unfortunately not! Every single bit of this crop is used to feed our herd of cows. We’ve been growing maize here for 25 years, and believe it or not, we’ve never had a cob make it onto our own kitchen table! 😂

A wee favour, please 🤎 With harvesting underway, there will be tractors and machinery moving around the farm, so please take extra care when visiting us and keep a safe distance from the working machinery.

🌽 The maize cobs are nearly there!! Hoping we’ll get it harvested over the weekend 🤞

If we’re going at the weekend, we’ll let you know, as one of the fields is right beside the farm shop and you’ll be able to watch it all happening! 🚜

We’ve been growing maize for about 25 years now, and in all that time we’ve only missed one year. It’s become a really important part of the cows’ daily diet, and we really noticed the difference the year we didn’t have it.

Growing maize this far north hasn’t always been easy. Our climate can make it tricky to get it harvested at the right stage, but earlier-maturing varieties are making it much more suited to growing here.

The tricky bit is getting the balance right. This field had a crop of forage rye earlier in the year, which had to be harvested before the maize could be planted. That means getting the maize in, giving it enough time to grow and mature, but still getting it harvested before the weather turns too wet and difficult. It’s all about making the most of the growing season and getting two crops off the same field in one year! 🌱

When we harvest the maize, we take the whole plant — stalk, leaves and cob — and chop it into small pieces to make silage. The grain provides starch and energy, while the rest of the plant contributes fibre. The cob and grain need to be broken down properly to help the cows digest the feed, and getting the timing and moisture levels right is key to making good quality silage for the winter.

There’s a lot of planning, timing and work that goes into getting the most out of every field. Now we just need the Scottish weather to play ball! 🌦️

Liz is a hugely experienced and talented florist and we’re delighted to have her joining us again after such a lovely run of masterclasses last year. She’ll be sharing her expertise, guiding you through and helping you create your very own beautiful Christmas wreath.

From our first day to every season since, we’ve grown, learned and welcomed so many wonderful customers. And while this is a milestone for the shop, it’s just one chapter in Humeston’s much bigger story—a farming legacy dating back to 1945. 🌿

Thank you to our brilliant suppliers and, most of all, to our customers for your continued support and for choosing to shop local.
