With over 20 years of experience in the food & drink space, founder Herman van Broekhuizen has long had a passion for flavour, a driving force behind Kiek in de Kook. Born in the winelands of South Africa, his life in food & drink began in the Western Cape vineyards before relocating to Scotland 20 years ago. There he honed his drinks knowledge as a bartender and consultant, eventually traveling the world creating cocktails for celebrity clients. A transition to the whisky industry followed where he worked as a brand ambassador for leading Scotch whisky companies focused on education of flavour in whisky. In his spare time, he created exotic dishes in his home kitchen for family and friends, inspired by his travels to over 50 countries around the world for both for work and pleasure (pictured here in Iceland). A growing interest in gut health led to his study of food fermentation to combat dietary issues such as acid reflux, of which he is now cured after years of discomfort and medication. When lockdown hit, he pivoted careers becoming baker for a Michelin starred chef working with specialist sourdough and later as a pastry chef at leading London bakery Little Bread Pedlar. Since moving to East Sussex in 2021, he's spent time as a chef with The Smallholding Group and charity Hands of Hope before setting up Kiek in de Kook in 2023. The name, meaning A Peek Into the Kitchen, plays off of his Afrikaans/Dutch heritage and desire to let people into the world of food and drink he creates for customers each week.
