💉 The flock survived the jab... despite acting like we were auditioning them for a Victorian tragic drama yesterday and Tom putting his rugby tackling skills to the test!🐑
If you saw the commotion, don't worry: we were just giving the sheep stock their Bluetongue vaccinations.
For those who haven't heard, Bluetongue is a viral disease passed around by biting midges (a.k.a. the absolute villains of the insect world). It causes high fevers, painful swelling, lameness, and—as the name suggests—can turn a sheep’s tongue blue. It makes our woolly friends thoroughly miserable and can be fatal to sheep.
Now, sheep already spend about 80% of their day coming up with creative ways to put themselves in mild danger, so we decided to eliminate this particular threat before the midges start throwing parties. 🦟🚫
Quick facts on why we vaccinated:
* 🩺 Prevention is key: Bluetongue cannot spread directly sheep-to-sheep, but midges carry it across whole fields in a breeze. The vaccine acts as an invisible shield for the whole flock.
* 🚜 Keeping the farm safe: Protecting our animals means protecting the future of our farm and keeping our livestock happy, healthy, and eating grass like nothing happened.
* ⏱️ Side effects: 0% illness, 100% dramatic stomping and holding a grudge against us for approximately two hours until we brought out fresh treats.
