As British Flowers Week comes to an end, a huge thank you to those who have kept me busy and supported our little flower farm over the last few weeks! I have loved growing and cutting for your florist orders, DIY wedding and event buckets, bunches and bouquets.

It’s such a privilege to be able to do what I do and although it can be relentless this time of year (you can chat to my husband about how much ‘time off’ I’ve had over the last few months), it’s all worth it seeing the field blooming and passing over armfuls of flowers to happy customers.

Now onwards and everything crossed for our flowers as we have a week of blazing sun and hot temperatures on the way.

So what actually is British Flowers Week?…

It is the annual celebration of the British cut flower industry organised by Flowers From the Farm We are proud members and have loved hearing the press coverage recently about the rise of locally grown flowers.

Going into our second year, we currently grow cut flowers intensively on just over 1/4 of an acre as well as cutting from our established perennials, trees and shrubs around the rest of our smallholding. Each year, we have been adding more grow areas, prioritising perennials for a more sustainable future.

It’s British flowers week, a celebration of growers, wholesalers and florists who champion British grown flowers!

We are kicking off highlighting some of the wonderful florists who used our flowers in their work last week. This is just a snip of the Somerset florists who love using British flowers and we look forward to meeting many more as the wholesale side of the flower farm develops.

Using a local flower farm or local hub is definitely not the easiest choice - no few clicks and next day delivery! It involves building a relationship with the growers, communication, uncertainty because of seasonal availability and can mean lots of driving round to gather flowers and foliage for events.

BUT I’m sure they would all agree, it is absolutely worth it in terms of the beauty, variety, quality and scent on offer, compared to imported flowers.

Thank you to the ladies featured today. You are wonderfully dedicated in making the choice to use British flowers and thank you for posing for me, despite it being early in the morning and after a long day at work!

A fantastic week of cutting for florists and DIY event buckets, finishing off nicely with a bit of therapeutic wreath making.

This customer commissioned a summery themed wreath for their sheltered porch. Using fresh foliage of bay, eucalyptus and ferns which will dry beautifully, and a mix of fresh and dried flowers, grasses and seed heads, the wreath will age naturally over the summer and look better and better.

Picked from our flower field in Stratton-on-the-Fosse last night, then bunched and delivered this morning… now that’s sustainable!

A couple of bouquets stuffed full of our early June’s finest, because photos of all the wind damaged flower crops and w**ds taking over the flower farm (I’m looking at you couch grass, bind w**d and thistles!) is much too depressing!

Farm fresh flowers delivered to Zen Rebel Studios & cafe in Midsomer Norton this morning.

Due to the hot weather and so many lovely blooms on the farm deciding to party all at once, we’ve made up some extra generous bunches this week!
