The first lot of dry cows have arrived on the maternity ward! 🐮 The countdown to Calving 2026 is on! ⏳

Our cows are on an autumn block calving system, which means they all calve over a 12-week period from the beginning of September until the end of November.

The cows are ‘dried off’ 8–9 weeks before their due date. We dry the cows off to give them a break from milking, allowing their bodies to rest and recover before having their calf and starting their next lactation. They naturally begin to reduce their milk production towards the end of their lactation.

We dry them off using a teat sealant to stop any bacteria from entering the udder. They then go out to graze on land away from the main farm for 4–5 weeks, where they spend most of the day eating and sleeping.

Around 3–4 weeks before they are due to calve, they return to the main farm and are introduced to a TMR (Total Mixed Ration), which contains all the vitamins and minerals they need to support them through the final few weeks of pregnancy.

They have access to a nice cosy shed with an all-you-can-eat buffet, as well as a large field if they prefer to be outside.
