Meet a Hereford champion from a very different era of American cattle breeding.

This is the Champion Female from the 1950 Blue Grass Hereford Show, photographed during a time when cattle breeders were pursuing a much more compact type than the longer-framed cattle commonly seen today.

Look closely at her build. She is remarkably low-set, deep-bodied, thick, and compact, with short legs and a heavy appearance. This style reflected the mid-century push toward early-maturing cattle that could develop finish efficiently.
Cattle have changed dramatically through selective breeding. Compare this champion with the Herefords you see in modern show rings, and you can see just how much breed type can change over generations.

An incredible snapshot of American livestock history from more than seven decades ago.

Would you prefer the classic compact type or the longer-framed cattle seen today?
