Yesterday, BSBKA held their annual theory training session ๐Ÿ

It was a brilliant and engaging educational day for all 30 of our new members, who spent time learning the essential foundations of beekeeping and gaining a deeper understanding of honeybees, their behaviour, equipment, and their importance to our environment. The day covered a wide range of topics, giving everyone a strong starting point as they begin their beekeeping journey.

Alongside the theory sessions, attendees also took part in a hands-on frame building workshop, where they were able to put their new knowledge into practice and develop some of the practical skills that will be so important in the apiary. ๐Ÿ”จ

It was great to see so much enthusiasm, curiosity, and willingness to learn throughout the day, and we hope everyone left feeling inspired and excited for whatโ€™s to come. ๐Ÿฏ

We canโ€™t wait to welcome the group to the association apiary soon, where theyโ€™ll get properly hands-on with the hives and continue building their confidence and experience with the support of our members. ๐ŸŒผ

Bees are among the most important workers on Earth. By pollinating plants, they support around 75% of flowering speciesโ€”helping produce the fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds we rely on, while also sustaining the wild plants that entire ecosystems depend on. ๐ŸŒณ

Their impact goes far beyond our plates. Pollination helps maintain biodiversity, supports food chains, and enables landscapesโ€”from gardens to forestsโ€”to regenerate and store carbon. Without bees, many plants would struggle to reproduce, and the effects would ripple across wildlife, agriculture, and the stability of our environment.

But bees canโ€™t survive on a few flowers aloneโ€”they need a continuous supply of pollen and nectar from early spring through to late autumn.

๐ŸŒณ ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜† ๐—ฎ ๐—ต๐˜‚๐—ด๐—ฒ ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—น๐—ฒ โ€” flowering trees like crab apple, cherry, and apple provide rich bursts of nectar and pollen, acting as vital food hubsโ€”especially in early spring when little else is available.
๐ŸŒผ ๐—˜๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€ ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐˜๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ โ€” often seen as weeds, theyโ€™re one of the first essential food sources for bees emerging from winter. Removing them can mean removing a lifeline.
๐ŸŒฑ ๐—Ÿ๐—ฒ๐˜๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐˜„ ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ฝ๐˜€ โ€” with around 97% of wildflower meadows lost since the 1930s, initiatives like โ€œNo Mow Mayโ€ show how simply mowing less can bring back the flowers bees rely on. Even a small patch makes a difference.
๐ŸŒธ ๐—ฃ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜ ๐˜„๐—ถ๐˜๐—ต ๐—ฝ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐˜€๐—ฒ โ€” choose a mix of bee-friendly plants like lavender, foxgloves, salvia, and hellebore, alongside flowering trees and shrubs. Look out for the RHS โ€œPlants for Pollinatorsโ€ logo in garden centresโ€”it highlights plants proven to support bees and other pollinators.

Bee populations are declining, largely because habitats and food sources have been lost. But the solution can start right where we are.
Plant a mix of flowers and trees. Leave space for wildflowers. Avoid pesticides. Rethink what a โ€œperfectโ€ garden looks like.

Because protecting bees isnโ€™t just about saving themโ€”itโ€™s about protecting the balance of life on Earth.
