At Harlequin Cottage the welfare of our animals is at the heart of everything we do, in fact that’s the main reason we started all of this in the first place 🖤

We are proud to produce meat that is 100% traceable from farm to table. We take care of our animals at every step from bringing the animal into the world to their final journey to the abattoir. We ensure that the best welfare standards are maintained at all times 🫶

We have been working with our local family run abattoirs who we know and trust for nearly 15 years. They only ever use the most humane methods and always handle our animals with care and respect 🙏

So that’s just one of the advantages of buying produce directly from the farm. You can ask the questions and get the whole story behind what you are eating 😊

Most people don’t know how important small abattoirs are - but their survival is a story about how a small change can have a massive effect on how we farm and eat 🌱

Our survey of 850 farmers showed small abattoirs are critical to high‑welfare, local meat. They mean livestock don’t have to travel long, stressful distances - and 58% of local producers can’t break even without them. These are producers that are striving for better welfare for their animals - and losing them would mean an even greater balance towards intensively farmed meat production.

When the Food Standards Agency considered removing a discount that covers up to 90% of their fees, 40% risked closure. Thanks in part to our survey, the FSA will recommend the discount stays.

We champion the highest possible welfare for farm animals. Supporting small producers, and the small abattoirs they rely on, gets us there.
