Sorry about the lack of sound, it's loud at the NEC!

This is something I get asked alot and I am pleased to say that all honey will help with the symptoms of hayfever ☺️ So enjoy a good spoon of your favourite honey where ever it's from and know it will all be beneficial as long as its real, raw honey.

Watching a beautiful sunrise and welcoming the promise of Spring sunshine kissing the skin…..thoughts turn to the coming season, warm days with the bees and how lucky I am to do this for a living.

It would seem selfish to keep this bucolic existence to myself, so I’m toying with the idea of offering the occasional beekeeping experience once the season unfolds.

Loading hives under a rising Sturgeon moon for an early departure to the Peaks. Five weeks without forage because of the drought in Norfolk has sapped strength of brood and bees from the hives, bringing into question their ability to produce honey from the Heather…..there was the possibility that the Heather too would fail to yield nectar. Gambling the time and resources needed to take 80 hives up to the Peak District sites was not an easy decision, but it was made and they are now there.

Glad to report that the first couple of days have been very encouraging, with plenty of nectar coming in and good weather forecast for the next 10 days. Nothing is guaranteed though in beekeeping, so fingers are firmly crossed.

The French seem to have had far too much input on naming these flowers, which thrive when people stop messing with pasture (the flowers, not the French). We know them as Dandelion (from the French, dents de lion….lion’s teeth). Pis-en-lit, rather less grand, translates as p**s the bed, due to the smell of the flowers, possibly familiar to those with an over enthusiastic alarm clock.

Anyway, Dandelion honey is hugely difficult to harvest in Eastern UK- there is generally too much else to tempt the bees, so whilst Leigh’s Bees Spring honey will have some Dandelion nectar within, it won’t be enough for it to be named Dandelion honey.

A long overdue attempt at candle making from the beautiful beeswax Leigh’s Bees produce as part of honey production. Beeswax is made by the bees in tiny flakes from glands on their abdomen. The beeswax cappings taken off the honey combs before extraction are saved and rendered down….and in this instance, used to make candles.

Unscented beeswax candles burn extremely cleanly, releasing negative ions which bind positively charged particles such as dust and pollen, neutralising pollutants and leaving the air cleaner.

These candles will initially be available direct from the stall (Creake Abbey, Holkham Christmas Market), but as more are made, they will be available through the website. The phrase “rod for my own back” springs to mind! Watch this space.

Approximate burn time of these pillar candles is 30 hrs. They are handmade and will retail for £18.50 each including vat.
