Hands up - who knew what a proboscis was? šŸ™ŒšŸ¼

We love being able to see these amazing insects do such cool insect things up close! Here they are just tidying up a bit of spilled honey using their proboscis which, as well as acting like a straw, is also bendy and kind of scary close up.

Follow for more cool honeybees antics!

Is there anything more satisfying than watching honey being poured into a bucket? 🄰

(Ok, maybe could give us a run for our money šŸ˜).

We’re just in the process of trying out some of our new machines. This isn’t how we’re going to fill our buckets in the long run but we were keen to see if everything worked and we’re pleased with the results.

Yesterday took a turn for the worse here at Oglesbees HQ. One of our very own little Ogles-babies got stung randomly by a honeybee and ended up being blue lighted to hospital.

This was a very scary experience and it just highlighted to us the importance of knowing the signs of anaphylaxis. In this case, the symptoms were:

- painful sting which resulted in immediate swelling to the area (little finger and into hand)
- redness spreading from hand all the way up the arm to the neck
- a dry cough that got worse very quickly
- hives developing on neck

At this point, I knew it was more than a localised reaction and that he needed immediate help. We rushed to the Urgent Treatment Centre in Newark (in the car he started saying he couldn’t breathe very well) where he was quickly administered adrenaline, put on oxygen and bloods taken. With adrenaline shots, you have to be monitored for several hours, so we were taken in an ambulance to Kings Mill resuscitation department, then the Children’s Assessment Unit until he was safe to go home.

Thanks to the quick response of all the doctors and nurses involved, he was able to make a full recovery, although he now has to carry EpiPens and antihistamines with him wherever he goes. How ironic that the son of beekeepers would be allergic to bee stings!

So if you’re ever in doubt about a reaction to a sting, get it checked out - anaphylaxis is a medical emergency 🚨

Watch the stacks grow with me. Watch me do a bad job at keeping track of how tall they are getting 🫠

These supers are heavy and full of honey ready to extract. They came from only four colonies on one site.

We’re having a wager on how many 30lb buckets all this lot will produce - what do you think??

Now for something totally unrelated to bees and honey…

Look at this absolute beauty! We found this caterpillar in our garden and we check on it every day. It is chomping its way through my olive tree, but I’m not sure I care because it’s so cool!

Who out there knows what species it is? We thought maybe a privet hawk moth??

Extraction time!

We are bringing in lots of honey at the moment which is keeping us very busy.

After uncapping the frames, we pop them into the extractor to spin the honey out. Thankfully, long gone are the days we used to do this by hand 🫠

Every year I have to stop myself putting my hand in while it’s spinning
