Sipa Honey Bees

Sipa Honey Bees British Buckfast honey bee breeders & suppliers: mated queen bees, nucleus colonies and full working hives for sale to beekeepers in the UK.

Our core beekeeping activity is the production of strong, healthy and resilient Buckfast Nucleus Colonies (Nucs) and Queen Bees offered for sale to beekeepers throughout the UK. Good quality Nucs that rapidly build into productive colonies are always in short supply. There are never enough to meet demand which leaves many people disappointed. Year on year we are increasing the number of honey bee

Nucs and Queens we have for sale in an effort to meet ever increasing demand. Calm and gentle bees are a delight to work with. This is one of our highest priorities in selecting breeding stock from which to produce our Nucleus Colonies (nucs) and Queen Bees. Bees which forage actively in poor weather conditions is also a valued trait, allowing our honeybees to produce a sizable honey crop, even in a difficult year. We like honey, so that’s important!

🐝 Signs of Spring!

We spotted one of our lovely honey bees making the most of these early snowdrops today. Despite the February chill, our industrious girls are already out exploring whenever the sun peeks through.

It's heartwarming to see these first signs of the new beekeeping season, as our bees discover these delicate winter blooms. Nature's calendar is slowly turning towards spring! 🌱

Following our post earlier in the week about consumer choice when buying honey here is a real life example. This honey from Stamford Street Co. (Sainsbury's own brand) costs 75p. Now that's pretty cheap. On the Sainsbury's website it says "Country of Origin - Packed in the United Kingdom", nothing else. This may be completely true - so I'm buying a British Product right? Well no, if you look at the far, in tiny writing in the address section it say honey from China.

We actually commend Sainsbury's for including that it is from China - they could have just written product from Non-EU Countries - this is the level of country specific naming we want to see. But it is still hidden away, if it was transparent wouldn't the website say Country of Origin : "China". Does the fact it was transferred from a barrel to a jar in the UK really change the origin of the honey. Would as many people buy "Zhongshan Street Co Honey"?

In these months we miss the sights of queen cells being drawn and virgin queens emerging.

Jobs for November

Tips for our for November! :

🐝 Don't open the hive unless you have to. The temperatures are dropping and the bees will have sealed all the gaps with propolis. We try to avoid opening the hives until around March other than for emergencies and the winter varroa treatment.
🐝 When you inspect make sure there aren't any gaps when you close up the hive that could cause leaks and drafts.
🐝 The temperatures have started to get a bit too low for syrup feeding, we have placed a block of fondant over each crown board in case of emergencies.
🐝 It is too late to add mouse guards and chicken wire to protect from mice and wood peckers if these are a problem in your area.
🐝 We are now looking to next year and planning our equipment needs. You can save a lot of money by buying the equipment for next year in the winter sales. You can also then spend the winter building up the boxes.
🐝 Finally we find the winter is a great time for learning more about beekeeping so we will be ordering some more books to read in the evenings! We we post some our recommendations on this page.
