Like many other animal populations, barn owls are vulnerable ๐ค. In this country, they are protected but currently are not on the endangered list.
Around Highclere ๐ฐ, there are many buildings with nooks and crannies which make appropriate nesting sites, but we have also installed boxes for them, so they have options ๐ซถ๐ผ.
Barns owls are a mosaic of brown tinted feathers ๐ชถ, the same sort of colour as the rough fields over which they fly.
With their wide wings barn owls can glide slowly whilst their fringed, soft, velvet-like feathers both dampen sound. Their serrated leading edges break up air turbulence.
When it dives down to pounce, the force is approximately 15 times its own body weight which is far higher than many other birds.
Throughout history and across many cultures, owls have been regarded with both fascination and awe ๐ฅฐ.
