Have you seen mushrooms like this in your local supermarket?! ππππ probably not... probably just some dry, tasteless button mushrooms. Most of the mushrooms you see in supermarketsβwhite buttons, chestnuts (marketing name, not actual chestnut mushrooms), and portobellosβare all actually the same species: Agaricus bisporus. Theyβre grown on composted straw and animal manure (mostly chicken), with a layer of peat on top to help them fruit properly. A huge huge huge chunk of the UKβs supply comes from Poland, where theyβre grown on a massive scale. What does this mean for sustainability and local produce in a market demanding mushrooms with little growers regionally?!
At FoD Mushrooms, we only grow wood-loving mushrooms, like Oysters, Shiitake, Lionβs mane. These mushrooms are a whole different story. They grow on natural hardwood sawdust, straw or logs, without manure or peat, and don't use any chemicals. They're healthier, tastier, and better for the planet too... oh, and local π.
