π’The Mackerel conversation continues π
Last week's post about mackerel clearly struck a chord, and we're genuinely heartened by the response. Thank you to everyone who commented, shared, and got in touch. The conversation around fish stocks and responsible sourcing is one we think really matters.
To be clear: we're not landing fresh Cornish Mackerel right now, and that's a decision we stand by. There is very little Mackerel being landed in Cornwall at the moment, and so this option simply isn't available to us. The quota has been reduced significantly, and we fully support this. Tighter quotas are exactly what the stocks need, and we look forward to seeing that they have a real, positive effect over time.
Rest assured: when Cornish Mackerel does come in, we'll bring it to you, hook and line caught, in great condition. That's a promise.
"We will always favour Cornish handline-caught mackerel. It is simply the best and most sustainable method of harvesting. When the stocks recover, that's exactly where we'll be.β Rob Wing
In the meantime, here's what we can tell you about the frozen mackerel we're currently offering:
β
Frozen at peak freshness: Caught in the winter months, when oil content and quality are at their highest, making them ideal for smoking and perfect for anyone who relies on oily fish in their weekly diet.
β
Strictly managed Scottish fishery: The Scottish mackerel fishery is tightly controlled and consistently produces high-quality fish. It's not Cornish handline, and we'll never pretend it is, but it's a source we trust.
β
Keeping the oily fish box going: Our oily fish box needs a reliable anchor, mackerel or sardine. With sardines landing only sporadically right now, frozen mackerel is what keeps that box working for the families who depend on it.
We're not here to tell anyone what to think or how to shop. We just want to be honest, offer the best we can with a clear conscience, and let you make your own call.
As always, any questions, just ask. π£
