Why is mushroom compost good 🍄
Mushroom compost is valued because it improves soil structure, water retention, and fertility. Despite the name, it's usually made from the growing medium used to cultivate mushrooms—not from mushrooms themselves. After one or more mushroom crops are harvested, the spent compost is recycled as a soil amendment.
Its main benefits include:
Improves soil structure: It helps heavy clay soils drain better and helps sandy soils hold together, making it easier for roots to grow.
Retains moisture: The organic matter acts like a sponge, helping soil stay moist for longer and reducing how often you need to water.
Adds nutrients: It provides nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and trace minerals. These are generally released more slowly than in many synthetic fertilisers.
Feeds beneficial soil life: Earthworms and microorganisms break down the organic matter, creating a healthier, more biologically active soil.
Can help buffer soil pH: Mushroom compost is often slightly alkaline because limestone is commonly added during its production. This can benefit acidic soils.
However, there are a few things to be aware of:
It may contain higher levels of soluble salts, so it's best used in moderation, especially around seedlings or salt-sensitive plants.
Because it's often alkaline, it isn't ideal for acid-loving plants such as blueberries, rhododendrons, azaleas, and camellias.
It's best used as a soil conditioner or mulch, mixed into the top layer of soil, rather than as the sole growing medium.
For most vegetable gardens, flower beds, lawns, and shrubs, mushroom compost is an excellent way to improve soil health over time. A layer of about 2.5–5 cm (1–2 inches) worked into the topsoil is usually enough to provide noticeable benefits,
