It’s been a busy weekend of sheep. Sorting, moving and cutting the wool around their bums. This has several different names, dagging, crutching, docking. We do it to stop the build up of poo over the winter, to make the area clean for the ram to do his stuff and to help the humans during lambing. Needless to say I don’t think the ewes even noticed.

I’ve spent the day at Farmwise Devon today where 1500 schoolchildren are learning about farming.

They've been cooking, making butter, holding chickens, pressing apples, grinding wheat, and even learning about butchering pigs!

It's so important that young people understand where food comes from and what animal welfare means on a practical level. To make their own informed choices about what they eat, they've got to be armed with the facts!

Our Blue Face Leicester ram finally has another male to keep him company. They have spent the last 24hrs in a small stable getting to know each other. We spray both of them around the head and bum with lynx deodorant. That way they both smell the same, this helps to stop them fighting each other. In past years we have put rams in together and they have head butted so hard that one has died.

The joys of farming. Wondering around the field looking at collecting poo 💩 samples. The very hot weather we have been having has made the parasitic worms burrow into the ground. The rain has brought them back out and the cattle and sheep will eat them whilst grazing. We need to do a Faecal Egg Count, this will test for the number of worms and the type. We can then treat the animals with the appropriate medicine. This stops the worms becoming resistant to the treatments and improves the health of the animal.

We have spent the weekend vaccinating against the bluetongue virus. Long stressful weekend.

As you all Know we put what we thought was a barren ewe in with the Blue face Leicester ram to keep him company, and we’ve had a set of late triplets as a result. Well normally the ram would be far away in another field when the lambs arrive so we weee quite intrigued to see what the ram would do. Well there was no surprise. Dad wants nothing to do with the lambs and has cosied up to the cows😂😂😂

The whole crop is being cut. Bailer due tomorrow 😀 This will provide fodder for our young stock during the winter months...
