Chicken politics at Tucketts Farm π
If you think introducing new people to the office is awkward, try introducing new hens to an existing flock.
We've brought three hens up from the coop at Fox Cottage to join the main group, but you can't just throw chickens in together as they are territorial, they hold grudges and they will absolutely kick off. So we've built a temporary cage around a coop to keep the new girls safe while everyone gets used to each other.
They've got their own food, their own water and their own shell grit which is everything they need. The plan is to keep them in this setup for about two weeks so the two flocks can see each other, get familiar and calm down. Then one late afternoon we'll open it up briefly and let them establish a pecking order before bedtime.
Meanwhile, the cockerel has taken a very keen interest in the new arrivals. He spent the morning running laps around the cage trying to find a way in. Let's just say his intentions aren't entirely chivalrous. He's settled down now though, which is a relief and the last thing we need is him hurting himself trying to get through the wire.
There's a bit of tarpaulin rigged up over the top just in case he gets any ideas about flying in. It may hold, it may not. Farming at its finest.
The old girls on the other hand are probably enjoying the peace and quiet for once.
