Chicken politics at Tucketts Farm πŸ”

If you think introducing new people to the office is awkward, try introducing new hens to an existing flock.

We've brought three hens up from the coop at Fox Cottage to join the main group, but you can't just throw chickens in together as they are territorial, they hold grudges and they will absolutely kick off. So we've built a temporary cage around a coop to keep the new girls safe while everyone gets used to each other.

They've got their own food, their own water and their own shell grit which is everything they need. The plan is to keep them in this setup for about two weeks so the two flocks can see each other, get familiar and calm down. Then one late afternoon we'll open it up briefly and let them establish a pecking order before bedtime.

Meanwhile, the cockerel has taken a very keen interest in the new arrivals. He spent the morning running laps around the cage trying to find a way in. Let's just say his intentions aren't entirely chivalrous. He's settled down now though, which is a relief and the last thing we need is him hurting himself trying to get through the wire.

There's a bit of tarpaulin rigged up over the top just in case he gets any ideas about flying in. It may hold, it may not. Farming at its finest.

The old girls on the other hand are probably enjoying the peace and quiet for once.

That's a wrap on The Great British Fibre Festival πŸ‘

What a weekend. We're back from Coldharbour Mill in Uffculme and just want to say a massive thank you to everyone who came by our stand, had a chat and showed interest in our Manx Loaghtan wool.

The first day was brilliant as it was really busy with lots of lovely people and great conversations. The second day was a bit quieter and that's the way it goes sometimes. Our sliver was the most popular by far, followed by the raw wool so it was great to see so much love for our fibre.

A huge thank you to our Sarah for running the stand and to the volunteer who gave up their time to help out.

And can we just talk about the venue for a moment? Coldharbour Mill is one of the oldest working woollen textile mills in the world, since Thomas Fox purchased it in 1797. It's a Grade II listed building and an absolutely stunning place to spend a couple of days. If you ever get the chance to visit, do it.

It was a real privilege to be part of an event that celebrates natural British fibre in a place with that much history. We loved every minute of it.

We're here! πŸ‘

The Great British Fibre Festival is up and running at Coldharbour Mill in Uffculme, and our Sarah is all set up and ready to go.

Here's a look at our stand. We've got our Manx Loaghtan sliver, sheepskins and skirtings laid out and looking lovely. Nearly all of it comes from our own rare breed flock back at the farm, a breed classified as "Priority" by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust as its one of the most endangered native breeds in the UK.

The festival runs today and tomorrow, so if you're around Devon this weekend and love natural British fibre, come and find us. Have a look at what we've brought, ask Sarah anything you want about the sheep, the wool and where it all comes from.

Every purchase helps support a rare breed. That's not a sales pitch, that's just the truth.

See you there.

Franklin and Freddy update πŸ‘

These two are coming along really nicely and it's so good to see.

The video shows a bit of the behind-the-scenes stuff first as in the feeding rota on the whiteboard, split between Sarah, Kat and Lucy, who between them make sure every single feed is covered. It takes proper coordination and these three have been brilliant.

Then you see what all that effort is for. Franklin and Freddy out in their field, tearing around without a care in the world. You can see how happy they are and the way they come running straight up to Sarah and Lucy says everything about the bond they've built.

These two were rejected by their mums and needed everything done for them. Now look at them. Full of life, full of energy, and absolutely thriving.

Massive credit to the team.

Franklin and Freddie's first day out πŸ‘

Look at them. Just look at them.

These two have gone from tiny, rejected lambs needing round-the-clock care to bouncing around a field like they own the place. Their first day outside and they are absolutely loving it.

But behind the scenes, the work carries on. They're now on day two of their 1.5 litre daily milk mix which is a 375ml bottle each, four times a day. Feeds at 7am, 12pm, 5pm and 10pm, every single day, no exceptions.

You have to be careful with the feeding too. As tempting as it is to let them guzzle the lot, you need to regulate it. If they take on too much too quickly, you get bloat, which can actually be fatal. So every feed needs patience and attention.

With the team working different shifts and different days, it takes real coordination to make sure every feed is covered. It's a proper group effort and everyone at the farm plays their part to keep these two on track.

But watching them out in that field today, full of life and energy? That makes every early start and late-night feed worth it.

What it actually takes to care for a rejected lamb 🍼

When a ewe rejects one of her lambs, that's when the real work begins. Right now we've got two little ones who need round-the-clock care and this video shows you exactly what goes on behind the scenes.

It's not just feeding. It's weighing out powdered milk to get the mix right. It's five feeds a day, roughly every three to four hours, tracked on a chalkboard so nothing gets missed. It's hot water bottles tucked in beside them to give them the warmth that mum would normally provide, because it's still cold out there and these two are tiny.

Everything we do is about trying to replicate what their mothers would be doing. The warmth, the routine, the constant attention. They need to feel safe and looked after, and that takes time, patience, and a lot of early mornings.

Last year we had four lambs in this position, so we know the drill. Two is less work, but it's still tiring as there are no days off and no skipping a feed.

A massive thank you to our Sarah who has been brilliant with these two and you can see how knackered she is from looking after these lambs.

Meet Franklin 🀍

Lambing season doesn't always go to plan. Our last ewe to give birth had twins, but sadly rejected one of them... this little one.

So here she is. Franklin. Tiny, but tough.

She's made it through her first day and night, which is a huge deal for a lamb this small. Without mum, she needs a lot of care like bottle feeding every six hours, round the clock, day and night. It's full on.

The one thing she doesn't have is company. Lambs need a companion as it's not good for them to be on their own.

Its been a successful lambing season but there are always a few mishaps along the way. What matters now is giving Franklin the best chance we can.

And she's already proving she's up for it.

Lambing season update at Tucketts Farm πŸ‘

⚠️ A quick heads up... some of these images show newborn lambs moments after birth, so there's a bit of blood and membrane. We've blurred the more graphic shots, but just a gentle warning before you swipe.

What a season it's been. We're incredibly proud of how things have gone so far and it's time for a little update.

Here's where we're at:

πŸ‘ 19 mums
πŸ‘ 27 lambs β€” 15 boys and 12 girls
πŸ‘ 4 ewes still to go

Twenty-seven healthy lambs out in the fields and we've still got more on the way. Every single one is a moment as you never get tired of watching them arrive and find their feet.

Huge credit to the mums who've done all the hard work. We just try to give them the best possible care and let them get on with what they do best.

We'll keep you posted as the last four decide it's their turn. Watch this space.

🧢 Exciting news, Tuckett's Farm is coming to The Great British Fibre Festival! πŸ‘

Our Sarah has hired a table at this year's festival at Coldharbour Mill in Uffculme, Devon on May 30th & 31st, and she'll have our sliver, sheepskins and skirtings with her.
