A damn fine cabbage in from the field today!

Due to the crazy season most of these Kalibos cabbages didn't develop beyond fist-sized but a few of these stunners will be making it along to Bishops Castle Flea Market tomorrow, come along then!

We'll be inside the town hall whilst all the michaelmas festivities kick off in the street :)

Isn't sorrel pretty!

The rain is finally bringing on the next succession of salad ingredients.

It's been painstaking trying to make up all the wholesale salad orders this year when the heat has slowed everything down/killed lots of plants. Some weeks I've been picking as much as 30kg of salad (with up to 20 ingredients) and its is reallllly slow picking. What a relief to pick from plentiful crops again!

God I love rain!
(Remind me of that in a few months time)

Beautiful carrot flowers!

No, unfortunately these aren't meant to be for seed. This is a 40 metre bed of early carrots that were meant for our veg boxes. The hard-baked ground has meant they are cemented in and far too difficult to dig out (my poor dad was trying to dig them with a crow bar last month). We've not been able to invest in expensive irrigation systems yet, and we are on mains water on a meter so we have to be very mindful of our usage.
And now, with the extreme heat and drought the carrots are all gone to seed.
After some rain the next succession are just about okay to dig, though the voles have had a good go at them.
Last year was definitely the year of the caterpillar, this is for sure the year of the vole. This does mean that the raptors are having a good time of it. We had a kestrel over today, and there's lots of barn owl activity. I even saw a heron swallow a vole the other week, and it's been stalking around the fields for months now.

Still lots of veg coming from the market garden. The trick to our resilience is definitely diversity- diversity of crops, and timings with successions, and diversity of habitat and ecology that keeps everything in balance.

Domino French Beans that I grow for Wales Seed Hub | Hwb Hadau Cymru are looking abundant despite me giving up on watering.

The beautiful 11mm of rain we had last week is already feeling like a dream. The ground is scorched dry again and the seedlings are struggling. Hopefully more coming in this week but the forecast for a hot September and potentially even hotter, drier 2027 is feeling a bit debilitating right now.

I'm trying to plough new pasture to put down to clover over winter ready to expand the cropping area next year but time is ticking and the ground is too hard to get the plough in.

If you want resilient open pollinated seeds that are adapting to changing welsh (and wider british) climates look to Wales Seed Hub | Hwb Hadau Cymru
Our online shop opens again on the 1st of September.

Delcious crisp, sweet and fresh watermelon from the polytunnel.
This is a wee one that fell off the vine but there's some bigguns out there, one the size of my head!

And we had 1.5mm of rain over the last 12 hours!! Finally!! The first significant rain in about (i forget) is is 9 weeks?! The earth is sighing in relief- as am I!

The first batch of compost made on the farm is looking very tasty indeed and is FULL of life!

There's not a lot to go around so there's going to havw to be some crop favouritism. This stuff is going to the onions that'll be harvested for seed next summer ☀️

This tops all the polytunnel treats. The Minnesota Midget Melon from The Real Seed Catalogue
So sweet and tasty and delcious- and look how cute those lil slices are.

A little treat after rushing home from work to see the firefighters extinguishing one of our fields. Its out now, without too much damage, but a very real and scary taste of what's been going on all over the Wales this year (And beyond of course).
