The carrots are flowering!

These are part of an experimental cross and a chance for me to practice growing carrot for seed- lifting in the autumn, selecting the best roots with the qualities I want to keep, preparing them for storage, storing over the winter and replanting in the spring.
It'll be interesting to see what the offspring of this seed will look like- watch this space!

Meanwhile, the flowering umbels have been very popular with the insects, and im hoping they help encourage insects like the parasitic wasps that predate on hungry cabbage white caterpillars. Its great to have all these flowering seed crops in amongst the market garden!

Instagram audio doesnt have Neutral Milk Hotel 'King of Carrot Flowers' which is disappointing

We're lucky to have inherited the most gorgeous hedgerows on our farm. They're brimming with life and contain so many species including dog rose, elder, hawthorn, blackthorn, field maple, hazel, elm, oak and more...and thats just the trees, they're also home to plenty of plant, birds and insects too.

Our plans over the next few years is to increase the number of hedgerows, gap up and improve existing ones and plant lots more trees for habitat and windbreak across the farm. The need to increase shade and protect crops from wind has become very evident this year. We also need to think more about how trees can help us manage water, improving water retention in the summer and infiltration in the winter. As the trees along the stream grow their roots should help to prevent the intense erosion from the fast moving water.

Hedges and trees are a huge part of what makes our land not only joyful to work, but in keeping it all in ecological balance that enhances the food we produce.

Its been a huge week here on the farm! The temperatures have been extremely hard to work through and we've been doing very early starts and late nights and passing out around midday- exhausted, sweating and headachey.
The plants have put on so much growth in the last week especially the tomatoes, the field has been cut and baled for silage, big compost delivery from and most excitingly we have big new fridges! This is a massive game changer in this heat. No more 5am starts to pack veg boxes! (Hopefully)

Excited for water melons!!
Refreshments now please. Working outdoors in this heat is killer. We are having to stick to early mornings and evenings and having a siesta in between (which is actually pretty great).

A lovely article put together by The Landworkers' Alliance in the first year of the market garden.
It's amazing to reflect back on how much we achieved in our first season here at Wern Farm, from breaking ground for the first time (cultivating permenant pasture without a tractor is not easy) to setting up new markets from scratch. Then there was building polytunnels, running events and tours, setting up infrastructure and irrigation, getting to grip with finances and business planning and of course, actually growing all the vegetables and seeds!

It's been a pleasure to forge new connections in our community harvest veg, watch trees grow and welcome the birds and insects that pass through!
