I have noticed people at our weekly market stall asking how to use our Green Garlic. Well, here is a great way to use them. They are delicious and so simple to include in any meal.

I like to chop up the whites and sauté in some butter and olive oil and use as the dressing for some pasta. I then finely chop up the green ends and use as garnish much like spring onions.

Find it in your veg box and on our market stall this week! 🥬

This weekend is looking busy with Sarn Fun day on Saturday alongside our usual market stall in Bishops castle. We will have some fun activities as well as our top quality locally grown veg. And of course we will have some summer solstice celebrations on Sunday too.

We have a market stall every Saturday! We are outside Bishops Castle town hall on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month and outside Hafan yr Afon in Newtown on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month. 9am to 1pm. Come and try some of our wonderfully chemical free and farm fresh produce!

An exciting time this week, as we watched the baby pied wagtails fledge from their cosy nest in the barn, and the robin hatchlings (in their nest in the same barn) get fluffier by the day! It’s such a treat to share our farm with such beautiful wild creatures, and a pleasure to watch them thriving without risk of being harmed by pesticides or herbicides. It’s not just humans that our veg is good for!

It’s always strange getting near the summer solstice, as summer is only really just beginning (despite the wet & windy weather this week) but our attention turns towards Autumn & Winter with the planting of things like winter cabbages and squash that will feed us all through the cold months, and sowing of seeds of kale, swede and purple sprouting broccoli that will should be feeding us next spring!
But not to panic, there’s still all the abundance of summer to come, with cucumbers and tomatoes setting fruit, and courgettes only a couple of weeks away… we’re looking forward to the sun coming back next week and speeding them on!

We 💚 farming with Nature, and this weekend we'll be at not one, but TWO local Nature Days!

TODAY Saturday 6th June - Kerry
TOMORROW Sunday 7th June - Berriew

We'll be talking all things Agroecology, Nature friendly farming and local food. With some farm fresh veg, plants and seeds for sale, as well as our Salad Leaf ID game!

A lovely article from The Landworkers' Alliance about Cân y Pridd Market Garden, one of the producers here at Wern Farm.

"It's amazing to reflect back on how much we achieved in our first season here at Wern Farm, from breaking ground for the first time (cultivating permenant pasture without a tractor is not easy) to setting up new markets from scratch. Then there was building polytunnels, running events and tours, setting up infrastructure and irrigation, getting to grip with finances and business planning and of course, actually growing all the vegetables and seeds!''

We'll have plenty of seasonal salads for your sunny Bank Holiday BBQs, as well as spring onions, kale, spinach, carrots, mushrooms, asparagus, potatoes, cabbages and plenty more farm fresh, chemical free veg!

We'll also be bringing some seeds and plants for sale, including tomatoes, aubergines, peppers, chamomile, thyme & wild rocket!

The sun will be out, so pop down and say Bore da!

Introducing Forest Garden Farm! 🌳

Forest Garden Farm is run by Esther & Xander, on Plot 3, which is the most variable land, with wet pockets and undulating grasses. Last autumn they joined Wern Farm and plan to cultivate a diverse business, to make the most of their diverse landscape, and that encapsulates their passion for trees, edible plants, conservation and land-based skill sharing.

Using agroecological practices that prioritise soil health and nature, they will be growing a range of products. Forest Garden Farm’s main focus will be on developing a tree and edible plant nursery. Alongside establishing a mixed fruit and nut orchard, pasture raised eggs and facilitating land based courses.

Inspired by the layers of Forest Gardening they will concentrate on propagating and planting trees alongside producing soft fruit, herbs, edible flowers, and eggs for the first few seasons, while fruits, nuts, and coppice products mature.

Both Esther and Xander have a wide range of skills and interests that they will be using to cultivate this dynamic farm business, and we can't wait to see their eggs, soft fruit and herbs in our veg boxes and at our farmers markets!
