Bonfire Night is a reminder that the little things in our horses’ routines can make a difference.

While we can’t control the fireworks, we can take steps to help our horses feel as comfortable as possible 🎆

- Keep their routine as consistent as you can.
- Make sure they have access to suitable forage in line with their individual needs.
- Check their environment is safe and secure (fencing, gates and stable latches)
- Keep an eye on them and plan ahead if they’re particularly sensitive to noise.
- Horses are natural trickle feeders, so maintaining their normal forage routine is an important part of supporting their digestive health.

A little extra planning can go a long way in helping our horses feel less stressed this Bonfire Night.

You may have heard that horses should receive around 2% of their bodyweight in forage per day – but it’s important to remember this is a starting point, not a one size fits all rule.

Forage requirements can vary depending on your horse’s weight, workload, age, metabolism, body condition and the quality of the forage.

And, the 2% guideline is based on dry matter, so you may need to feed more haylage by weight than hay because haylage contains more moisture! For example, 10kg of haylage does not provide the same amount of dry matter as 10kg of hay!

After weeks of heat and sunshine, fields have been looking more like the Sahara. Now the rain has arrived, the grass can recover and, with sunshine too, start growing rapidly.

For owners of good-doers, overweight horses and ponies prone to laminitis, this is the time to think carefully about grazing management.

Fresh, rapidly growing grass can be particularly rich in sugars and energy. A sudden increase in access to lush pasture can be a concern for horses that are overweight or at risk of laminitis.
So, what can you do?
The key is to manage how much grass your horse has access to and how quickly their diet changes.

Consider:
- Restricting grazing time
- Using a grazing muzzle where appropriate
- Creating a smaller, well-managed grazing area
- Keeping an eye on weight and body condition
- Having a reliable forage option available

For horses whose grazing needs to be restricted, good-quality forage can play an important role in a controlled feeding routine.

We have a range of forage options to suit different horses and their needs. Head to our website to explore the full range and find out more about each variety.
