Far from living the dream
Many people think flower farmers spend their days playing with flowers. The reality is that's an important, but very small part of the job.
Yesterday, I spent all afternoon pulling w**ds. In a few hours, I cleared around 50 metres of bed and filled four bulk bags with w**ds.
Because I don't use herbicides or other chemical w**d killers, every w**d has to come out by hand. I do use mulch, but I can't afford to cover the whole farm.
It means I'm always fighting a losing battle. By the time I've worked my way around the flower farm, the first bed I cleared is already disappearing beneath another flush of w**ds.
I've learnt not to be too precious about it. The goal isn't perfection. It's simply to try and give the flowers enough space, light and air to grow well.
If you’re growing flowers at scale, you have to accept that some jobs will never get finished.
